Aliit Aetos is a Mandalorian Clan led by Aliit'alor Kassandra Aetos. The clan currently recognizes Kai Oryk as Mand'alor. Formed in the Year 22, Aliit Aetos blends a mixture of ancient Mandalorian teachings and culture with a more modernised stance based on the current state of the galaxy, allowing it's members to follow its culture in a relevant way to their lives, mostly focusing on ensuring that its members follow the honourable path in life no matter their profession.

Culture

Rites of Passage

The Rites of Passage for the Aetos, known as perpatóntas ston ouranó, which translates as “Walking the sky path”; Is an important phase in every members life that they must go through, whether it’s to be an aspiring warrior to a practitioner of armour making. Once an Aetos enters the intermediate phase of adulthood or are a newly embraced adult to the clan, they will undergo more rigorous and focused training in the desired skill they wish to aspire to as part of their journey through the galaxy. All Aetos who begin their training are taught by a senior member of the clan, mostly from a parent, but if there is no parent present it will be that of a senior member of that certain skill. It normally takes months to train prior to being given their permission to begin the perpatóntas ston ouranó.

Like all Aetos before them, their Rite of Passage's first phase is acquiring their lifelong companion to be, an eye-snatcher. While there was not a static location for this to be achieved, the person undertaking the task would be required to travel to the nearest outpost controlled by Aetos clansmen on a viable planet containing the species so that they could begin their Rites proper. Once on a suitable planet, they would be allowed time to prepare supplies and survival gear for the journey ahead, bringing only what they deemed necessary based on their training provided over the years. When the person is suitably prepared, they are provided with a week’s worth of rations by the Aetos as a head start to ensure they are given ample time to properly situate themselves in the wilds and find a source of sustenance of their own, as well as a tracking fob for the Aetos to track them; should they wish to end the rites and back out, they can activate the fob and be collected. They are then subsequently sent of into the wilds of the planet to begin the perpatóntas ston ouranó.

They must endure harsh forest environment living off the natural bounty of the land around them, using the tools they brought with them and the skills they have learned and climb miles across the mountains before coming upon an eye-snatcher nest. Here, they are tasked with either taming one of the creatures currently inhabiting the surroundings or obtaining an egg from the nest to be brought back and raised from its infancy. While both methods are acceptable by the Aetos standards, those looking to become warriors and follow more closely with the ideals of the Aetos are advised to attempt to tame an eye-snatcher on location as this would prove their more dominant traits and capability to win over the hearts of others and become the alpha; for those wishing to join the ranks of the immortals, taming an eye-snatcher is considered a requirement.

After having tamed their eye-snatcher or collected an egg, they are then to return to the Aetos outpost on the planet to report completion of the task, which is certified and relayed on to the aliit’alor, as well as the Aetos armourer to be recorded into the clan archive. Once this is completed, the next and final phase of the rites begins for the young Aetos. They are to travel back to the home planet of the Aetos, Ord Cantrell where a ceremony will be held in highhall by the alor and the Armourer, within which the clan aliik will be engraved into the members skin with ink as a lasting reminder of their achievements, they can have the aliik engraved in whatever place they desire, as the placement is unique to each member and considered just as sacred as the markings on the skin itself. Once the young Aetos has completed the ceremony, they will be inducted and considered as an adult amongst their peers.

Failure to complete the Rites of Passage

While the rites can be an arduous journey for those of the Aetos, there are times that some will fail to complete the rites for one reason or another. Should a time ever occur that a member of the Aetos are unable to complete the perpatóntas ston ouranó, they will be retrieved from the field by the Aetos stationed at the outpost on the planet they are currently undertaking the rites on and safely brought back to the compound where the alor and armourer will be notified of situation. Proceeding on from this the young Aetos is to return to Ord Cantrell, to highhall. From here they will continue to learn the ways of the Aetos. After a period of one galactic year, the member may attempt the rites again to become a fully fledged Aetos, should they wish to, there is also no limit to how many times a person can enter the rites.

In extreme and unfortunate cases that a young Aetos on their perpatóntas ston ouranó should fall and lose their life, the Aetos will send out a search party to attempt to retrieve the body of the fallen brother, bringing it back to highhall on Ord Cantrell where the body will be ceremoniously buried and their family; should they have one will be notified of the loss.

Language of the Aetos

Although all mando'ade are required by the resol'nare to learn mando'a as part of their cultural upbringing and education, aliit aetos over time under the tutelage of the first alor and armourer; Kassandra Aetos departed from the contextually specific language for internal use in favour of a new, more extensive language. This new text eventually came to be known as Glóssa'aetoú, which roughly translates into galactic basic as 'Language of the Aetos' and currently has translations for most; if not all of the galactic basic language.

The tale of the languages origins is told to be derived from the first armourers interpretations of calling sounds made by Ikaros, an Eye-snatcher and Kassandra's closest companion, along with a mixture of classic mando'a punctuation and words. Over the years Kassandra was able to observe a plethora of calling cries made by the Eye-snatcher in a number of different environments, documenting them. Initially this was a venture for her to learn how to communicate with her companion so that Ikaros could more efficiently aid her life as a mercenary, but as she transitioned into Mandalorian lifestyle and her aliit grew in size, she realised it could also serve as a psuedo-secret language that the clan could use to ensure safety of all members no matter the situation.

Although the language primarily existed purely as a way to vocally communicate between the members of the aliit, it was eventually written to text so that future generations could learn the language with ease, as well as providing the same safety for the aliit when communicative via other methods where vocalisation was impossible; such as sending encoded messages that only those of aliit aetos could comprehend. Glóssa'aetoú would follow a similar hieroglyphic style as mando'a in it's design, allowing for relatively easy transcription as well as practical application over aesthetic design.

The resol'nare

Verd ori'shya beskar'gam, a Mando'ad naas ures Resol'nare.

Mando'ade are nothing without our culture, and everything with it. Without our culture, our people would have died out along with the Taung. Recognising this, the Mando'ade reaffirm the ancient position that adherence to Mando'ade culture is what dictates whether one is Mando'ad or Dar'manda. These simple tenets are what makes one a Mando'ad, and nothing else. The most important aspect of Mando'ade culture is the Resol'nare, which translates to Basic as the "Six Actions" or "Six Tenets." The Resol'nare are:

Ba'jur, beskar'gam,
Ara'nov, aliit,
Mando'a bal Mand'alor
An vencuyan mhi.

Which translates to basic as:

Education, armour,
Self-defence, clan,
Our language, our leader
All help us survive.

Ba'jur

Education. All Mando'ade are expected to raise their children as Mando'ade. There is no typical education regiment, but most consist of firearm and blade practice, piloting, equipment upkeep and maintenance, Mando'a and the Resol'nare. Some also choose to teach their children other skills, such as hunting, cooking, wilderness survival, battlefield medicine, machine repair, and other practical disciplines.

Beskar'gam

Armour. Beskar'gam is the most outward display of being a Mando. Beskar'gam also says a great deal about its owner. While most aruetiise see identical sets of armour varying only in colour, each set of Beskar'gam is actually quite unique and tailored to suit the comforts, fighting styles, and abilities of its owner. In addition to wearing the armour, Mando'ade are expect to be able to care for it and keep it in peak condition, ready for combat at a moment's notice.

Ara'nov

Defence. Other than Beskar'gam, Ara'nov is probably the tenet that sentients most associate with the Mando'ade. All Mando'ade are expected to be able to hold their own in combat, regardless of sex, age, or profession. This fighting prowess is also expected to be put to use to defend ones aliit in times of need. Many assume that because of this tenet all Mando'ade are soldiers by profession, but this is not the case. Mando'ade merely recognise the importance of being able to defend oneself and those they love. While anyone can obey the other tenets, Ara'nov is what separates the Mando'ade from the hut'uune.

Aliit

Clan. Unknown to many aruetiise is the emphasis the Mando'ade place on family. Family is such a big part of Mando society that it's organisation is centred around it, in the form of clans. However, aliite in Mando society are far different than those found in most galactic cultures. Mando aliite can best be understood with the old proverb, "Aliit ori'shya tal'din" which translates into basic as "Family is more than blood". While it certainly is important to raise the children one births as Mando'ade, adoption is just as important and more widespread in some places. Adoptees are given the same status and treated the same as those related by blood. Through this practice, the Mando'ade have managed to keep strong throughout the centuries.

Mando'a

Language. Although some may disagree, Mando'a is extremely important. It sets us apart from the aruetiise and it strengthens our bonds with those who have come before. It serves as a form of universal communication and way to tie together what is otherwise an extremely diverse group of sentients. It also allows us to express ourselves; through proverbs, poetry, and song. Not only that but it allows us to express that which is indescribable in any other language. Because of Mando'a, your vode will understand you when you say shereshoy, even when no one else in the galaxy can.. It is Mando through and through.

Mand'alor

Sole ruler, Mandalore. It is no coincidence Mandalorians call themselves the "Mando'ade". This word translates to Basic as the "Sons and Daughters of Mandalore." Mand'alor is never Mand'alore. He is our one ruler and leader of the clans. He is the most worthy warrior who takes the place of the previous Mand'alor after he joins the Manda. He leads us against those who would do us harm and those who he would have us harm. He is the embodiment of the ideals of te Sol'yc Mand'alor and the guardian of Mando values and life.

Canons of Honour

The Resol'nare is to be followed in our daily lives, but the canons of honor apply in this context aswell, derived from the principles of the Six Actions but focusing on a different aspect of life. Unlike the Resol’nare, the Canons of Honor are much looser in interpretation, each Mandalorian able to take the Canons and apply them to their life differently. The actions are necessary and essential, the canons separate the thugs from the warriors, both complete us and make us Mando'ade.

Strength

Strength is Life, for the Strong have the right to Rule

It is by these words that we determine our worth in combat and in our existence. Strength is a broad term, and touches every aspect of Mando'ade life, the strength to live and survive, the strength to teach and exert oneself to do great things for our people, and the strength to persist as a culture for millennia more as we carve our place in the galaxy. It is by our own mettle we stand strong and united, ready to lead by example for the generations to come after us, and they for the next.

Honour

Η ΤΙΜΗ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΖΩΗ, ΧΩΡΙΣ ΤΙΜΗ, Η ΖΩΗ ΜΑΣ ΧΑΝΕΤΑΙ
Honour is Life, for with no Honour, one may as well be Dead

Mandalorians have been scrutinised by many in the past and will surely be in the future, for indeed, we differ greatly from most of the outsiders we face and interact with on a regular basis. The concept of honour differs greatly between warrior to warrior, clan to clan, but one steadfast rule is to always strive to walk the honourable path in life, be good to your people, rely on your own strength in battle and never falter even in the darkest of times. But if we simply adhere to our whims, give way to stagnation and become lazy, lest we forget our roots, then we have no right to be Mando'ade any longer. For any true warrior walking the honourable path, to be stripped of our right to call ourselves by that name is a fate equivalent to or worse than death itself.

Loyalty

Loyalty is Life, for without one's Clan, one has no Purpose

Every Mandalorian carries with them a name, this sacred name unites all those under this banner in an unbreakable bond. To be without one, and without our kin is to lose a part of ourselves, for we are not complete without those we would call family. Protect them then and vie for their well-being, for this is our lot in life.

Death

Death is Life, One should Die as they have Lived

One should Die as they have Lived, legacy is important in order to leave a mark on the galaxy and the people within it. We are judged for all that we do in life, so by all accounts we should be remembered for what we are, Warriors, Mandalorians, Brothers and Sisters. The only life you are afforded is this one, make it count for you, your clan and your legacy, live honourably, and die proud that you have made your mark.

Rules of War

Although the aetos pride themselves on living honourably and strive to avoid war and conflict where possible. As mandalorians in an ever shifting galaxy, the clan need to be prepared for the inevitable call to arms by the mand’alor in a great crusade for their people, when this day comes these laws of war are a strict adherence and governing conduct to ensure honour is not faltering and to prevent unnecessary suffering, safeguard fundamental sentient rights of those involved in conflict, and to ultimately restore peace.

Throughout galactic history, including that of the mandalorian crusaders, war has widenly become a cultural event studied from both political and philosophical perspectives. Kassandra realised after studying past conflicts that unlimited warfare was largely a counterproductive endeavour when compared to most objectives the parties involved wanted to achieve, due to this she wanted to ensure anyone who called themselves an Aetos would have laws of customary practices during conflict so that the clan would not repeat past mistakes or lose themselves and forget their ways in the pursuit of victory.

Principles of War

With any conflict, one must first consider the necessity of employing military violence in any given situation. Clan Aetos believes that military force should only be employed to obtain the submission of the enemy in question, or to reach a certain military objective in a swift and efficient manner. Regardless of necessity, any action taken against the enemy or in pursuit of an objective must not violate the Rules of Engagement at any time. Necessity for force is based upon nature, location, purpose and use. Once Clan Aetos has deemed that the necessity for Military action be engaged, the clan must do so in conjunction with the following principles.

Proportionality

This principle states that the nature, duration and scope of an engagement must not grossly exceed what would be required to decisively achieve victory in any given conflict, whether that be to counter hostile acts or to resolve demonstrated hostile intent. As such Clan Aetos should only respond with only as much force is needed for the situation as not to stain our honour. It could be argued that any unfettered amount of force could be deemed necessary, and while this would win you victory, it has to be asked at what cost. If a clan brother was pinned down by a bandit sniper, unable to move without reinforcements, an orbital strike would bring a decisive and swift victory, but the collateral damage of innocent life and property that would ensue far outways the victory that could be achieved, nor would it be an honourable act as our enemy is not innocent bystanders or those not directly involved. Thus any action or retaliation taken should never be disproportionate to the situation and heavily ties into the principle of avoiding suffering where possible.

Avoid Unnecessary Suffering

While mandalorians are not strangers to war, it should be recognised that suffering will never be eliminated from it, as the act of going to war is to create suffering and pain. Should Clan Aetos ever need to go to war or fall into conflict, it must be a priority to ensure that all decisions and actions taken by the clan are done with the aim to minimise unnecessary suffering to all involved, including the enemy we face, as well as to any civilians and noncombatants involved. This minimal approach to damage also extends to ensuring that only proportionate destruction of property relevant to the objective occurs, we are not monsters and even in the midst of conflict clan aetos strive to be better than those we face.

Distinction

This principle can sometimes be the most hard pressed in difficult situations, the concept of distinction requires that combatants where possible be easily and clearly distinguished from noncombatants and that any objective deemed necessary by Clan Aetos be clearly distinguished from any protected place. As such Clan Aetos are required along with following the other principles to only direct their operations towards combatants and military objectives that have clearly been designated as within proportion of requirements for victory, and all actions taken will be discriminate in nature in line with all classifications.

Classification of Personnel

This area of classification was set out so that Clan Aetos have clear rules on who can and cannot be engaged with in any given conflict, the Aetos are honourable warriors, not warmongers or monsters and as such the clan has set out a number of classifications to be assigned to people based on a number of criteria to ensure the principles are closely followed, mainly being the unnecessary suffering that can potentially be caused by war unchecked.

Combatants

In all conflicts, it is paramount to ensure the identification of all combatants, who are people that clan aetos consider to be entitled to engage in hostilities, whether it be following the laws of war set out by the clan or allies and/or enemies involved in the conflict. Firstly, we consider there to be a number of characteristics that are used to identity what Clan Aetos consider to be a combatant, such as the wearing of a fixed and distinct uniform identifying them to their respective company and/or governing force, open carriage of lethal arms capable of dealing fatal damage to others.

While the Laws of War are primarily to protect those of Clan Aetos in the case of an open conflict, the list of defined Combatants is not limited to those of the clan and as such are protected by proxy under our laws, but are not expected to follow such rules like clan members. These defined combatants are as such:

  • Members of Clan Aetos
  • Members of an armed force, be it allied or hostile
  • Members of a regular militia or volunteer units
  • Members of guerrilla units.
  • Members of a non-occupied nation who take up arms against an opposing force.

Noncombatants

Clan Aetos considers people assigned under this category as people who may accompany combatants in any given conflict, but do not perform actions in the same capacity as them, nor do they fall under the characteristics identifying them as one. The Aetos Laws of War states that these people who are identified to be noncombatant may not be the sole subject of an attack during any conflict, and all involved who follow these laws must ensure to minimise damage to all parties who fall under this classification, as well as other civilian populations involved. While noncombatant is a blanket term protecting all considered to be civilian in status, including those considered to be aruetii, some examples are stated here to provide example:

  • Technical Personnel
  • Medical Personnel
  • Contractors
  • Correspondents
  • Other Civilians

Spies

While Clan Aetos believes the act of spying to be dishonourable and thus will not conduct such actions, they are not alien to the fact it is sometimes a necessary act during a conflict and do not condone others who pursue such a profession, be they vod from another clan or aruetii. Spies are under aetos definition, those who act under false pretenses in order to obtain information on hostile or potentially hostile parties with the intention to communicate their findings back to allied forces. While Aetos do not consider spying to be a violation of the Rules of Engagement, agents captured by allied forces will not be protected by clan aetos under the Laws of war. Should anyone from Clan Aetos be found partaking in the act of spying under the definitions provided above, they will lose their status as an Aetos and thus no longer be protected under the full scope of the Rules of Engagement, or the aliit resol’nare.

Prisoners of Conflict

While rare in occurrence, Clan Aetos acknowledges that to ensure the principle of unnecessary suffering to all involved be respected, there may be times that detaining combatants on the battlefield be the more humane and honourable way to end a conflict in the act of reducing suffering. Regardless of a detainees status Clan Aetos will treat them the same, if injured the clan will provide treatment sufficient enough to bring them back to normal health. Should the conflict cease all prisoners will be released in a safe, neutral location in a healthy state. As part of detaining a prisoner of conflict, Clan Aetos follows a number of rules for handling and processing a detainee.

Search

Upon detainment of any individual, they will be searched and all weapons or items considered to be capable of harming others will be removed from the individual, along with any items of possible intelligence. Once they have been searched and deemed harmless, the detainee will be allowed to remain in whatever protective equipment or clothing that is deemed necessary for safe transportation to the closest detention facility or outpost.

Silence

As part of ensuring no harm befalls any allied combatants or others involved. All detainees are monitored and not allowed to converse with one another, this is to ensure any hostile collaboration is avoided between detainees and to ensure safety for allied forces.

Safeguard

Once safely detained, all prisoners of conflict are to be adequately guarded for the duration of the current war, protection is against other detainees or enemy forces until a time that they can be properly processed and released once conflict ends.

Classification of Weaponry

Clan Aetos provides minimal limitations on the classification of weaponry that is used on the battlefield, only ensuring that all weapons be used in necessity and only be utilised in-line with the principles of war set out. Despite this, Aetos does classify a number of specific munitions types that have limitations on their usage to ensure that they more accurately fall in line with the principles set out, as well as ensuring their usage does not endanger breaching the resol’nare or Canons of honour.

Incendiaries

This weapon classification covers the usage of tools or devices used to deploy flame based attacks, including thrown weapons or handheld weaponry such as flame-throwers. Aetos views incendiary weapons to be on the borderline of acceptable weaponry regardless of the objective required, as they cannot be used to efficiently end a life without considerable suffering first, due to this the usage of incendiaries is limited in such a manner that they cannot be used directly against other organic species as this would breach the principle of avoiding suffering where possible. Incendiaries may be used against mechanical enemies or properties as long as this coincides with the principle of proportionality.

Fragmentation

Fragmentation weaponry covers all munitions that are considered fragmentary in nature, such as mortars, hand grenades and explosive mines. Clan Aetos views this weapon classification in a similar manner to Incendiary, though with a slightly looser stance. Due to the chaotic and uncontrollable nature of this weapon class, they are only permitted to be used if they are considered to be the most proportionate response to a threat, and if deployed the user must ensure they are used in concordance with the principles, reducing suffering caused or structural damage. As well as this if there is any considered risk to noncombatant personnel from any side, usage of this munitions class is prohibited until the risk to noncombatants is confirmed to no longer be present.

Chemical / Biological

Any weapons that deploy chemicals or main purpose is to cause biological damage to any organic personnel involved is strictly prohibited and considered as a treacherous means of warfare by clan Aetos. The pretence of this is that chemical warfare is a direct violation of all principles of war, as once the weapon is unleashed on the battlefield, it is impossible to control and is indiscriminate in it’s attack on combatants and noncombatants. In addition to this chemical warfare is normally not deployed for it’s lethality but to cause suffering within enemy ranks to provide an upperhand, which is a direct violation of the principles. If any of the Clan Aetos are found to be employing this form of weaponry for any given reason, they will be detained and removed from the battlefield, stripped of their stance as an Aetos and risk being classified as dar’manda for what Aetos consider to be an inhumane act.

Classification of Tactics

While most tactics that the Aetos could deploy and are taught in are considered to be inline with the principles of war, there are a few tactics which the Aetos would find to be dishonourable to use on the battlefield which are listed here under the rules of engagement. Clan Aetos prides itself on honing honourable soldiers who need not deploy tactics of subversion or trickery in attempts to win victory.

Ruses

One such tactic that the Aetos look down on is conducting a Ruse, which can be defined as a tactic which is directly used to deceive the enemy and cause injury as a direct result of the deception. Any form of victory achieved by direct deception of the enemy is considered questionable in honour as Aetos pride themselves on winning through their strength and prowess. Some examples of enacting a ruse can include placing up dummy installations, falsifying communication transmissions and planting fictitious units via such falsified information.

Treachery

Probably the most disdained tactic that the Aetos reject is the act of treachery in any and all forms possible. Treachery as per the Aetos definition is considered as any tactic deployed as a means of injuring the enemy through deception much like a ruse, but the deception is directly employed to take advantage of the enemies humanity or good will. An example of treachery deployed on the field would be feigning, such as faking an injury or truce in order to lure the enemy into a killbox to engage them with lethal accuracy and force. Other examples include the use of noncombatant organisations to sneak into the kill range of the enemy or catch them off guard. All acts of Treachery are considered a violation of the rules of engagement, and as such a breach of the aetos cannons of honour.

Assassination

A touchy subject of debate in the Aetos is the act of assassination, while it directly is not considered to be in breach of the principles, if a conflict can be ended through a single target being eliminated it could be considered the highest adherence of the principles in one aspect, but assassinations normally involve active under deceptive means to get close to the target. Due to this grey area, Clan Aetos will not directly take part on assassination missions nor send their members to assassinate a target outside of a conflict zone. Exceptions to when an Aetos may assassination a combatant target is if it is in the confines of what is concered to be the conflict zone, and only if it can be achieved without the use of deception or subterfuge, such as a sniper taking position in hiding and eliminating a target with minimal harm to their surroundings. Targets that may be considered as assassination targets are purely limited to Military Leadership and important combatant targets. The act of employing this tactic on anyone outside of the confines of the limitations stated above is considered prohibited and any individual acting as such is not protected under the Aetos rules of engagement.
