Beskar ingots are characterized by their distinctive matte silver hue and wavy patterns that many associates with etched iron. Unusually strong molecular bonds give beskar an incredible resistance to both physical and energy weapons. These unique properties also make beskar difficult to work with. Although their methods have never been revealed, ancient Mandalorian smiths developed secret processes for refining and manufacturing with beskar. Most foundries made complex alloys with varying ratios of other elements, and it is known that pure beskar is too heavy to carry. The metal's strength has made it invaluable in many industrial applications, but it is most well-known for its outstanding armor and weaponry. A skilled Mandalorian armorsmith can turn properly forged beskar into nearly blaster-proof, and even lightsaber-proof protective plating.

Beskar is a rare metal surveyed only on the terrestrial giant Mandalore and its companion Concordia. Once plentiful in the Mandalorian system, the unique element spurred economic growth in sectors throughout the region as militaries, mercenaries, and crime lords vied to curry favor with the unrivaled substance's sole providers. The Mandalorian people, for their part, carefully guarded the secret methods they had developed to smelt and work the material. Although they might trade weapons, armors, and even ships crafted of the substance, the unmatched metal commanding unmatched prices on the galactic market, the Mandalorians reserved to themselves the best technology and all of the methods related to beskar.

Over the millennia, Mandalore's own wars of expansion and conquest exhausted the metal's finite supply, and items made from beskar were nearly impossible to find outside of Mandalorian control. While the metal is still extremely rare, salvagers, thieves, and smugglers fuel a thriving black market where beskar scavenged from battlefields and factories can be bought in many corners of the galaxy, for an exorbitant price. Although it cannot be verified, one rumor suggests a merchant chanced upon a wrecked Mandalorian freighter carrying a large load of beskar around the year 1500 BCGT, and subsequently made a fortune selling the ill-gotten treasure into the market over the course of the following decades. Many collectors and brokers in the beskar market believe that as much as half of the beskar in existence outside of Mandalore can be traced to that single wreck. Because several Mandalorian groups fanatically track down beskar and beskar products with an almost religious devotion for their return to the Mandalorian clans, the beskar trade across the galaxy is often conducted in secret, protecting buyers and the sellers alike.
