The Kerdos Company is the New Republic's nationalized recycling company. When buildings don't meet regulations, or ships cost more to maintain than they are worth, New Republicans turn to the Kerdos Company to demolish them and extract any raw materials they can. The Kerdos Company uses advanced extraction and recycling techniques that are protected by many New Republican patents. The Kerdos Company also serves as the governing company of the Sluis system.

The Kerdos Company has been the center of both controversy and praise with its planetary planning and development projects. Projects such as the Kerdos Sluis Proto Star Project (a massive construction project on Sluis Proto Star) have begun reshaping the Sluis system at a rapid pace. While some environmental groups warn against such programs, the Kerdos Company has carefully relocated many species and declared Sluis Van as a protected planet.

History

The Kerdos Company is an ancient company. When Coruscant was still being developed, the Kerdos Company assisted in construction, waste management, and demolition of old buildings. Rough times hit and the Kerdos Company fell with the rise of the Galactic Empire. The Kerdos Company has since been reborn and is now a highly respected and very productive branch of the New Republic's Ministry of Civil Engineering.

Glorious Beginnings

One of the Kerdos Company's many recycling plants on the planet of Coruscant.

The Kerdos Company began as a small recycling operation on the planet of Coruscant during the time of the Old Republic. With expert management and dedicated staff, the Kerdos Company grew to become the largest player in the Coruscant waste management industry. It provided the economy with valuable raw materials while keeping the planet relatively clean. Under the expert guidance of the president of the company, it grew in value consistently between 20% and 40% yearly.

For the most part, the Kerdos Company stayed on the planet of Coruscant and chose not to venture to other planets unless absolutely necessary. This was in part due to the president of the company believing a too big to fail company will do just that. Indeed, Coruscant likely would have never become a planet-wide city without the Kerdos Company.

The Fall of the Company

Hundreds of years passed on Coruscant and the Kerdos Company still stood with the vision of the first president in mind. The war between the Old Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS) raged on and when the dust settled, old parts and ships needed recycling. The Old Republic was very interested in recycling old CIS ships and droids for their own war machine's production. The war would last a costly three years but while the governments fought and lost, the Kerdos Company's wealth grew.

The Salvager Droid, known by New Republicans as "Scary Sam".

With the Separatist War over, the Galactic Empire took control. The Empire's aggressive nationalization and suppression policies made free business impossible for Kerdos. Vital members of its staff, from workers to management, faced restrictions and oppression if they weren't human. The non-human staff were treated so poorly that they came to refer to themselves as "Imperial waste". Coincidentally, the company was renamed to the now-dissolved Imperial Waste Services just a few years later. That was the end of the first Kerdos Company.

The Rebirth Of An Icon

As a result of the death of the first Kerdos Company, a large portion of its staff abandoned Coruscant for the Outer Rim. With the help of the Rebel Alliance, the defectors managed to rebuild their business on Adbatar, making its first new step onto the galactic market on Day 334 of Year 7. The founding members were: Alph Virphen, Engin Berk, David Kellar, Ryan Valdemar, Maric Durmin, and Mandor Bg. This new organisation, formed with a united goal towards freedom, would come to be recognized as a resurrection of the company they had once broken off with; once again, they would be known as the Kerdos Company.

For the next few years, the Kerdos Company saw a certain stability of its presidents; as an example, Chali Desdra is believed to have been the Republican CEO with the longest term. Sadly though, in those times the recycling technology was not very advanced. Differently from today's procedures, the available tools did not allow the direct recycling of materials, and waste had to be turned into wreck first, then transported to specific recycling plants, where eventually materials could be extracted and reused. This complex procedure was troublesome, very demanding on sentient resources, and extremely time-wasting: that caused a large backlog of incomplete jobs, eventually leading Kerdos Company to become a shell of what it was in the past. For this and for other reasons, up until Vexander Graves took control, Kerdos Company fell into an economic hole with little hope to recover. Kerdos wasn't seen as a positive investment.

The EVS Construction Droid, known by New Republicans as "Mouse Muncher".

An example of the old and inefficient technology of the time was the Salvager Droid. New Republicans knew it as Scary Sam. Given its shape and the fact that materials were melted inside its large furnace, the droid looked quite scary to common people and recycling employees as well. Before the efficient EVS Construction Droid was designed, the Salvager Droid was the machine of choice for Kerdos Company. Scary Sam was such a popular nickname and machine that a civil award was created with that name, specifically for Kerdos employees.

Thanks to scientific breakthroughs, the recycling sector witnessed many changes. When the technologically-advanced EVS Construction Droid made its appearance, the whole industry benefited from it. Recycling times were cut, intermediate steps (wreckage, transportation) were no longer required, and the droid could be managed remotely without the need of a constant presence and monitoring by the employees. The EVS had also a more appealing look, and it was immediately renamed by the Republican populace as Mouse Muncher.

During Kristina Roberts's and Edmond Zaccone's administrations, Kerdos didn't see much progress due to difficulties with the new equipment. Kristina and Edmond were both known as good presidents of Kerdos, but it took Edmond Zaccone's retirement and the appointment of President Dan Russ and Vice President Het "Patches" Patchateeka to start changing the minds of New Republicans on the nobility of "waste disposal". Within days of appointment, they began designing and gaining permits for the largest project in Kerdos Company history: the Kerdos Sluis Proto Star Project.

New Life and Progress

With Dan and Het at the front of the development of Kerdos Company, the recycling group sought to reinvent what it means to be a Kerdos employee and a part of what they began calling the crew. Dan and Het lead a team of graphic artists that redesigned Kerdos advertisements and equipment decals. They combined northern and southern operations, reducing the number of people in the management team to three. They renamed Kerdos positions and separated them from the Ministry of Civil Engineering allowing them to better promote and recruit new employees. They even changed the center of operations from Sluis V and Republica to Sluis Van.

With all these changes, New Republicans signed up for employment at a rate never before seen. All the progress and developments sadly did not go without a price. With all the developments, Dan wasn't frequently spotted at board meetings. He was replaced by Sanka Ceveri some time later. Het remained as Vice President of Kerdos Company.

The two worked hard on improving life for Kerdos employees. On Year 15 Day 124, a decision was made to shrink the number of positions in Kerdos Company to better administrate employees. The change, which would take place on Year 15 Day 153, would mean Kerdos Company would no longer recognize the Cadet, O-1, O-2, and O-3 ranks that the rest of the New Republic recognized. The starting salary was going to increase from 1.5 million credits to 2.25 million credits. The announcement was met with applause from those who wanted to see Kerdos Company improve as well as from those who wanted to see a larger salary.

Within a few months of working, Sanka and Het finalized plans with Eli Descartes for the manufacturing division. Eli was invited to head the division on Year 15 Day 139 and accepted shortly after receiving the message. It was designed to manufacture all equipment the company would need for operations and sales. Sanka and Het were pleased when the first factories began construction on Sluis V. It seemed to them that their dream team was assembled and it was time to take on more contracts.

Notable Assets of Kerdos Company

The Kerdos Company owns many assets as a New Republic Nationalized Company. A few notable assets are listed below.

Kerdos Research and Development Station

Located in orbit over the gas giant Sluis Proto Star, Kerdos scientists are working constantly seeking new methods for recycling raw materials, demolishing structures, and constructing new ones. The station experienced a few set backs in its construction, but was completed on time. It features several laboratories, simulation areas, and numerous rooms to store equipment.
