The TIE interceptor was designed by Sienar Fleet Systems as an answer to Incom's T-65 X-wing starfighter. Based on Darth Vader's x1 TIE Advanced prototype, Sienar crafted a space superiority craft with greater speed and firepower than the standard TIE/ln. For economic and training ease, Sienar retained the ball-shaped TIE cockpit and many of the control interfaces, but souped up the TIE's performance to impressive levels. While many features of the Interceptor were similar to previous models, one notable difference was the changes to the solar panels at its' side. The panels were elongated horizontally and shortened somewhat vertically. They were also engineered with a slight 'dagger' shape and the top and bottom of both panels angled inward toward the cockpit slightly. This added to the craft's maneuverability. The engines were also greatly enhanced from the TIE/ln model, giving it a top speed rivaled by few other fighters, most notably the [[RZ-1 A-Wing Interceptor|A-Wing Interceptor]]. In addition to these changes, the weaponry was doubled, to a total of four Heavy Laser Cannons. The cannons were also moved from their position on the cockpit, to new posistions on each point of the dagger-shaped solar panels. However, the two hardpoints on the cockpit were left on the craft, in case future developments on the model could allow for more weaponry. This weaponry change allowed the TIE Interceptor to increase the overall spread and coverage of its weapons, thus maximizing its' lethal effect. Like its' predecessor, however, it lacks basic life support systems, and all Interceptor pilots are required to wear the standard Imperial Flight Suits.

Like most Imperial craft, especially fighters, the TIE Interceptor was designed with the lowest production cost possible. With an overall production cost that is below 50,000 credits, the Interceptor was intended for mass-production. Using similar tactics to the TIE/ln model, the Interceptor also relies on superior numbers and its' high maneuverability during dogfights and engagements. During the Galactic Civil War, the TIE interceptor was introduced to TIE wings, with a single squadron of 12 interceptors standard on most Star Destroyers.

They were also engineered with a slight 'dagger' shape and the top and bottom of both panels angled inward toward the cockpit slightly. This added to the craft's maneuverability. The engines were also greatly enhanced from the TIE/ln model, giving it a top speed rivaled by few other fighters, most notably the A-Wing Interceptor.
