Overview

Regarded by many as the most versatile of all Rebel starfighters, the Y-Wing is capable of handling a wide variety of missions with only slight modifications. The inclusion of Ion Cannons in its arsenal make it an especially popular starfighter amongst pirates. Like the famous TIE Fighter, the Y Wing is powered by a twin Ion engine. Unlike the TIE, however, this ship has the engines mounted to either side of the main hull, giving it the characteristic Y shape when viewed from above or below. A drawback to this design has proven to be the fact that it now leaves the Y wings power couplings in an exposed position, making them a preferred target in dogfights. This variation of the Y wing designated the BTL-S3 is a two man variant, usually requiring a pilot and a gunner. It has superior shields to its sister ship, the BTL-A4 Longprobe, due to the inclusion of an extra Novaldex power generator. The extra power is also necessitated by the larger weapon compliment. The proton torpedo magazine is located just under the passenger/gunner seat and is commonly removed for the BTL-A4 model to make room for the extra sensor package.

Role

The Y-Wing BTL-S3 trades speed and maneuverability for a heavier and more varied weapon load than many other fighter models. The Y-Wing is less adept in dogfights, and usually relies on the support offered by such craft as the X-Wing or A-Wing Starfighters. However, it is quite proficient at Freighter and Capital Ship encounters, due to the twin Photon Torpedo Launchers and Ion Cannons in its' arsenal. Thus, the typical role of this fighter is the heavy assault/ bomber. It is quite common to find flights of these ships aboard New Republic Capital ships, due to their versatility, and strength in a support and assault role.
