Zaltin Corporation is a twice-defunct medical corporation that opened its doors to the galactic marketplace from their home on Thyferra on Year 3 Day 153 and rose to prominence on Year 5 Day 176[1]. Prior to that, the Corporation was one of the two largest medical companies on Thyferra. During that time, it co-existed with Xucphra Corporation in what was known as the Bacta Cartel, where the two companies monopolized the production of bacta and bacta-based medicine for galactic distribution. In late Year 5, the Bacta Cartel was disbanded after the Galactic Empire successfully conquered Thyferra[2]. Under the leadership of Moff Victor von Ismay[3], the Empire installed a leader in Xucphra Corporation and eventually forced Zaltin Corporation offworld.

History

The Bacta Cartel

Decades before the Empire rose to power and placed de facto control of the planet in the hands of one company, Thyferra -- homeworld of the insectoid Vratix -- was one of the most economically volatile worlds in the Republic, in no small part because of its uniqueness. Thyferra, of course, is the only known source of pure bacta, the miracle fluid that can heal almost any wound short of dismemberment or disintegration. While Vratix colony worlds produce bacta in other sectors, few believe any of these colonies would last a single year without support from Thyferra and the Bacta Cartel.

For hundreds of years, since at least the time of the last great Sith war, the Thyferran government was largely an extension of two major bacta-production corporations -- Xucphra and Zaltin, both owned outright by Human interests in the Core. Under these small bureaucracies, millions of Vratix labored to create bacta, ostensibly without complaint. Indeed, to most in the corporate world, the arrangement seemed too good to be true. The Vratix didn't need to be coaxed into doing the bulk of the work; the insectoids didn't even want to run things. And since the creation of bacta was all but impossible without the skills and knowhow of the Vratix, they knew they could not be removed from the equation by force. It seemed a perfect arrangement, so long as the Vratix felt they were being treated more or less fairly.

Just before the Galactic Empire rose to power, a string of scandals involving corporate payoffs to a nominally Vratix-controlled government erupted, followed soon after by the revelation that Xucphra and Zaltin corporations, the behemoths that together formed the Bacta Cartel, had sabotaged their own alazhi fields in an effort to hike the price of bacta galaxywide. These shocking events inspired the usually anti-bureaucratic natives to take a more active role in their planet's government, showing concern about Thyferra's standing in the galaxy at large in what even corporate opponents saw as an elegantly bloodless coup.

For about a ten-year period after the Trade Federation's defeat at Naboo -- a time called Alazhixazha (or "Thriving Season") by the Vratix, and the "Vratix Occupation" by galactic corporate interests -- Xucphra and Zaltin were forced to toe the Vratix line. The insectoids forced the Cartel to compete with a number of local companies and "alien" business interests, even the Hutts, in a freewheeling open market that saw consumer awareness of the wonder medicine skyrocket from the Rim to the Core.

For this single decade in the last thousand years, Thyferra's capital regained its ancient Vratix name, Xozhixi. Humans still ran many of the administrative bureaucracies on Thyferra, especially those involving business, but the Vratix watched them like hawkbats. However, this standoff would not last forever.

Galactic Growth

Zaltin officially opened its doors to the galactic market on Year 5 Day 176[1] under the leadership of medical visionary Tork Bendor. Even prior to its official founding, the wheels of Zaltin Corporation were set into motion by its founders while exploring the galaxy looking for suitable marketplaces offworld for their bacta as early as Year 3 Day 153. Shortly after the corporation’s inception, Zaltin expanded its mission to include the development and distribution of medical equipment along with its raw bacta and bacta products.

Under Dr. Bendor’s leadership, Zaltin Corporation worked closely with the Vratix of Thyferra. These insectoid beings introduced the healing power of bacta to him and aided in his operations on Thyferra. Zaltin Corporation began investing all its time and assets into setting up Alazhi Farms to mine the minerals needed to make bacta that was then sent to a bacta refinement facility where it becomes then becomes the healing power so thought after by the galaxy. With Zaltin Corporation now set into motion, Tork Bendor hoped to bring the galaxy the healing power of bacta to all the sentients of the galaxy.

Unfortunately, Dr. Bendor’s work was nearly undone in Year 5, when the Galactic Empire invaded Thyferra[2].

The Invasion of Thyferra

"So citizens of the galaxy, I ask you: Who has been removed from Thyferra by this great all-knowing Empire? Not Zaltin!"
— Tork Bendor

Year 5 ushered in a sweeping change in Thyferran politics when the entire planet was conquered by the Galactic Empire[2]. While Zaltin reported zero company casualties, the Empire carved up the planet and officially named Xucphra as the sole bacta producing company operating out of Thyferra. Additionally, they had no reservations invading Vratix cities, forcing the populations to either flee or be enslaved. Zaltin opened refugee camps for their Vratix friends outside of Xucphra territory, even broadcasting their victory on Year 5 day 188 over the Galactic News System their reaction to the Imperial broadcast that aired a few days prior[4].

The next day, Zaltin released another broadcast stating that the Vratix’s planetary leader had died at the hands of the Empire[5]. They stated they had struck a bargain with the newly appointed leader where the Vratix would work for Zaltin in exchange for continued use of their refugee camps. Zaltin assured the galaxy that their production of medical products would not be hindered by the Empire. Their optimism and declared benevolence lasted only two years, as all around them, the Empire encircled them on Thyferra[6]

”New Management”

"To be quite honest Jaina, we fear for our family."
— Gitane Demone

Dr. Bendor’s leadership of Zaltin was succeeded by Gitane Demone. Armed with the company’s initial mission, Chief Medical Officer Demone continued the company’s life until it was taken over by Utono Brutza[7], who turned over controlling interest in the Zaltin to the infamous pirate group known as Eidola. The change of hands sent Zaltin staff running for their lives, fearing what their life would be like under the pirates’ control. A few years later, the company dissolved, its assets were assumed to be added to the Eidola stockpile.

Brief Resurgence

In Year 15 Day 224, four years after its dissolution, Zaltin opened for business again under the leadership of Kaminoan Doctor Gido Goodheart. Its existence was short-lived, however, as it closed its doors only a few months later.

Products

Zaltin and Xucphra introduced a majority of medical equipment into the marketplace as soon as they brought their business to the galactic stage. Even after Zaltin’s dissolution, their impact on the global medical market is visible to this day.

Bacta

One of the most sought-after items in the galaxy. Bacta is a red, sticky fluid that stimulates an organic body’s own cells and tissues to repair themselves at an alarming rate. One can submerge a body with nearly fatal wounds in a tank of bacta and find the body perfectly healthy in a matter of days, rather than months. The Bacta Cartel created three more portable versions of bacta delivery: a paste, a syringe, and a patch. Both the paste (found in a standard issue medikit) and the patch heal wounds just as effectively as an entire tank would, but just to a lesser degree as they are applied directly to a single wound. The syringe, known as a “healing stick” is a direct injection of bacta into the bloodstream. This unique delivery allows several small injuries to be healed simultaneously, regardless of their location on the body.

Equipment

The bacta tank and the medikit are both essential to treating harsh wounds. These items are vessels for bacta application in one way or another.

Vehicles

The kettrifee air mover is a first-response vehicle for planetside medical treatment. It is equipped with four medical bays and has ample room for patients, doctors, droids, and medical equipment.

Starships

The Sprint-class rescue craft acts as a spacefaring version of the kettrifee air mover. Equipped with two medical bays and sublight engines capable of 1,200 kilometres per hour, this powerhouse is a staple for any spacefarer.

The pride and joy of any starfleet is the Medical Nebulon Cruiser frigate. It is a spacefaring hospital and a marvel of modern engineering.

Buildings

Every planet has at least one hospital. Blueprints for the essential structure were designed by a combination of the Bacta Cartel’s brightest engineers and medical technicians. It boasts 8 medical rooms fitted with state of the art equipment, along with over a dozen multipurpose rooms.

A more specialized facility is the psychiatric hospital, also known as an “asylum”. This building is designed specifically for encouraging mental wellness in individuals who are struggling with cognitive, psychological, or psychiatric ailments and disorders. The dormitories, medical bay, and pharmacy are all designed to be comfortable, spacious, and welcoming.

Space Stations

Interestingly, Zaltin and Xucphra developed not just a hospital space station (which is a paired down version of their terrestrial hospital), but also medical factories and even research and development stations.
