The Altisian Jedi Order, small in number, lacked the resources to effectively train young padawans. As a part of the effort to rectify the situation, Master Con Semper and his apprentice Vir Calder, the latter also with expertise in droid programming, placed their collective wisdom in lightsaber construction into a RA-7 protocol droid. The Altisian Jedi Order Lightsaber Instructor Droid was meant to merely be a tool to help the padawans review their masters' teachings, but the droid exceeded their creators' expectations. The droid performed its intended function of providing a checklist of all necessary tools and components, descriptive texts on the function of each, as well as how to acquire them. It also gave the padawans step-by-step instructions on how to assemble the lightsabers. While those were all programmed knowledge, what surprised the two Jedi was the droid's intelligent behavior, able to re-interpret many of Semper and Calder's instructions in different ways, including providing helpful examples on past padawans' lightsaber construction experiences, to later groups of padawans. Its ability to break down the math puzzle necessary for crystal tuning, in particular, impressed Semper and Calder the most.

In Year 21, the Altisian Jedi Order acquired six additional RA-7s from Cerberus Corporation and cloned the programming of the first droid onto the new droids. These seven droids instructed a number of Altisian padawans before being released to Force Sensitive individuals outside the Altisian Jedi Order. It had been confirmed that the order would create no more of these droids.
