“To dance….means everything. It is a reason to go on living.”
Early Life
Born on the perpetual dark side of Ryloth, which is called the Nightlands, where life is very hard, Danai was born with a twin sister, whose name was Dinva. They helped their parents, who were rycrit farmers, by helping to guide the rycrit and herd them with their singing and dancing.
Danai’s family farm was small and located far from the lively cities. Because of this, her parents were rooted in the quaint ways of old Ryloth tradition, which was very different back then than it is now. Back then, families could make money by selling their children into servitude, and hope that they fall into better lives that way.
Danai’s sister Dinva was much more lively and rebellious than she. At the age of sixteen she escaped with a Anzat bounty hunter, while Danai was too fearful and stayed behind on Ryloth.
Meeting the Swordsmaster
Danai went on to be sold to a family of wealthy Zygerrians. She served this family for many years, until the year 25. The family, who boasted many warriors among them, was visited by a Noghri swordsmaster selling his wares, having heard of the powerful, noble families who ran the palaces of Zygerria.
This man’s name was Sekou Tau. Danai watched him carefully and listened to how he spoke. He was very strong, and even smarter than the Zygerrians who had enslaved her. She cautiously approached the Noghri man and asked to leave with him.
Learning Dinva’s Fate
Sekou was surprised to meet her, because her appearance seemed familiar to him. He spoke of another Twi’lek woman he had helped. He told her of a woman who had run with the Ettyrmin Pirates. This woman had gone by the name “Danai Eyan.” Danai could not believe her ears - she reasoned that Dinva must have used her name everywhere, in the hopes that she would one day track her down. It was too late for all that, however. Sekou told her that Dinva had been cast out by the pirates, and left with a Bith warlord named Dane Star, and withdrew into the Pentastar Alignment.
Sekou was not clear on what had happened next. There had been great trouble for Dinva after this, and her messages to Sekou became erratic and murky.
Dinva had been imprisoned by the Pentastar for crimes she did not commit; Sekou believed in her innocence and her transferred to his prison in Quermia space, where he set her free. And that was where she had been residing, as the most nubile and polarizing dancer of his harem.
Danai was shocked and elated all at once- at last reunited with her sister, and soon she would see her again. Sekou said that he would take her away, to a lush planet that he governed - Quermia II.
Starting Life Again
She was brought to Sekou’s palace as his newest concubine, an exotic performer among a throng of beautiful women. She was not a wife, that was true. But Sekou sometimes sired children with his favorite paramours - and Danai was the latest and lithest among them. Amid the beauty of Quermia II - with its cold mountain air, its green forests, and its deep, shimmering lakes - she saw love in Sekou, and she felt safe, at last. And so she became pregnant with her first child, a Noghri son.
