Overview of Gruk Hukta
"Brutal, powerful, calculating, unyielding, blood-thirsty" are a few terms used to describe Gruk by those that encounter him. For no other reason than it is fact.
Very little about his early years has ever come to light to this day other than he grew up and lived by his combatant instinct. Each day training to become more powerful than his peers, his blood-lust increasing all the while. He lived for the glory of combat. His sole purpose, seeking out a worthy opponent. His ambition, to earn his place as a true warrior.
Blood for Glory
There are individuals whose entire future is shaped by their pasts and Gruk would like nothing more than to be one of those individuals. Given over to the hutt owner of a gladiatorial blood pit at a very young age, Gruk had been trained all his life to compete in vicious combat. While not all his bouts were contests to the death, there was enough pain and misery inflicted on both his opponents and upon him to make death seem almost welcome at times; all done for the sadistic glee of countless spectators. But it was in this arena that he learned to relish in the morbid and grotesque, and to draw power from the cheers of the crowd.
Biography
It is more than likely that Gruk was either kidnapped from his clan or that they had been killed. Gruk never enquired nor did anyone tell him any facts, other than he was a fighter. He was never sure if that was meant physically or due to surviving past experiences. It is believed he was older than 3 and no longer a "shoat" as the training was directly geared toward the males. In this training he was taught about weapons and how they should be used to be most effective. This meant not only the weapons of a Gamorrean, such as their prized the Arg'garok, but all other melee weapons they might encounter during combat and how to utilise them for extra efficiency.
Childhood ended for Gruk at 6 years of age and now as a young adult put his training into physical practice. Gruk would often feel anger towards those he fought because, in his opinion, his opponents deemed him inferior to them, despite his build. As a Gamorrean his language skills were less than Galactic basic. They thought him foolish, oafish and unintelligent. This was to be the undoing of many.
Gruk's first challenge was to a young Noghri, also enslaved, but who thought himself greater in the slave hierarchy. Gruk took everything in his stride as he entered the arena in front of thousands of hungry for blood, hutts. They were given a choice of weapons. The Noghri opted as always for a blade while Gruk took a chance with a Vibro-axe, figuring the reach aspect would be good. The fight was short but high impact. The Noghri used hand to hand techniques alongside his blade skills. He was fast and soon enough Gruk felt a powerful blow, not from the blade but from the Noghri's powerful fist that sent him reeling. Stumbling up to his feet he glanced around and tried to focus. The blurred image came towards him and he swung his arm in defence. The vibro-blade decapitated the Noghri swiftly and Gruk was proclaimed victorious. This was to be the start of his fighting career as it stood. It stood as honour for his race; for a boar to face an adversary in combat to first blood, for either to be defeated or die trying. Death had become.
The fights continued, each time Gruk learning from his opponents and their own race skills and choice of weapon. Choosing one of his own that would impinge on their game play. He knew he should have favoured the Arg'garok, the weapon of his people, but he was too fond of his multi-weapon skills to choose a favourite.
As he grew older his opponents become ever more menacing. The tougher they were, the more he relished in the combat arena. Gruk was particularly impressed with his fight with a Barabel who has excelled in all his previous fights. It appeared he believed his own press and had become arrogant and complacent. Gruk bided his time using some hand to hand before unleashing his good old fashioned Thogk. He had heard the Barabel speak of his Neanderthal type weapon, but due to his language difference the Barabel had apparently thought that same as many, that Gruk was too stupid to understand him. This was to be his downfall. The Barabel lunged at Gruk with his glaive in one hand reaching out to pull him in with his free hand. Gruk dodged and swung his Thogk, firmly implanting the nail into the Barabel's skull. He was ever mindful of the tricks they might pull to beat him. He was more calculating than even the hutt gave him credit for.
The only reason that Gruk earned his freedom came from one of his former adversaries in the arena, a grizzled old Klatoonian that had managed to win his freedom, did something no one expected… he purchased Gruks’s contract and then set the Gamorrean free. Gruk and this unnamed warrior had met many years ago when Gruk fought with pure careless rage. A way of fighting that allowed to him kill at ease and will, but not against a fighter as experienced as this Klatoonian. Gruk was defeated after a long and bloody battle and his now saviour had spared his life. When Gruk asked why he was being set free, the Klatoonian simply chuckled and said that he was providing the young Gamorrean the same opportunity that he’d been given, and that it was up to Gruk to find his own answer to that question. In the months since then, Gruk wandered aimlessly, knowing only how to fight, until he was contacted by a mysterious employer who had heard of his prowess. This man offered him a chance to use his ability to train soldiers in his ways of bloodthirsty combat; to create a force which the galaxy had never seen. A chance to cut a path of destruction and fear through all who opposed him. It is here he can find the answer to the question, why was he set free?
