Vessia'ja (Sacrifice)
In the earliest days when the Hutts expanded their criminal empires they had targetted the Twi`lek people in order to lay claim to the riches that Ryloth had to offer, more specifically Ryll. For every aggressor and wannabe conqueror the people of Ryloth vanquished another popped up its ugly head to take its place. One of these so-called conquerors were a band of Chevin named The Unsavory Horde. Once they had landed near the city of Nabat the war insued between the Horde and the Dura clan was one that lasted for years with neither side winning any ground except losing tremendous amounts of life on both sides. As the conflict reached new heights the ruling Clan Council had to step in. As the Clan Council and Zo'Kova (Clan Head) of the Dura clan met with the leader of the Unsavory Horde. A deal was struck. The Chevin would cease their hostilities, even defend the clan and were willing to transport their Ryll offworld provided that the Twi`leks would mine it. But then they demanded something else, something that wasn't negotiable. If they would like to see the dawning of another day they would be forced to hand over some, not all, of their firstborn daughters to live out their natural lives as slaves for the Horde. The ruling Clan Council rewarded the Zo'Kova of the Dura clan for his diplomatic solution by granting him a seat on the Clan Council. Years had passed since the deal had been struck that caused the Twi`leks and Chevin to live in "peace". Granted there were slight skirmishes over time, but no full-fledged battles took place since the deal.
Dakich'ee (Knowledge)
In the year -4 the Zo'Kora (Clan Head) was Anoon Dura who had married the clan's Kiva (Head Priestess) on day 178 of the same year the couple was blessed with twins, Inun Dura and Tann Dura. In year -3 day 181 they were blessed with another boy, Chee Dura. All three children were immediately groomed to join the three castes. The twins where Inun would follow his father's footsteps and join the Sesk'bumat (political caste) eventually being prepared to lead his clan. His twinsister Tann was groomed by her mother to follow her example and join the Sesk'mahvus (priestess caste) to become a Kisa of Kika'lekki (Mother Goddess). However, besides these castes they would have to to be teached in the ways of the Sesk'osima as well. Finally the youngest of the children, Chee, would be trained in the ways of war in the Sesk'vati (warrior caste). Besides these individual castes the three children would share another caste, the Sesk'osima (artist caste) where each would walk a different path.
Sesk (Caste)
As the children grew so did their knowledge about each of their own castes. Inun devoured every bit of knowledge inside the Sesk'bumat he could find about the Dra'Damor (Game of Clans) to make a fine Kiva and honor his ancestors who had led the Dura clan long before he ever would. Besides being such a brash youth he did a formidable job in learning the finer arts of diplomacy and politics as a whole. His twinsister Tann would be teached by none other than her very own mother as they made their way, every week, to the grand temple at the capital of Lessu to start her tutelage, education about and strengthening her spiritual bond with Kika'lekki. Their younger brother, Chee, was trained by the Sesk'vati. This involved lots of physical and weapon training as much attention was spent to close combat as far ranged targets. After each week of studying Inun would be quizzed by his father about each clan, their Zo'Kora, family tree and their respective strengths and weaknesses. Then he would continue by debating with Tann on phylosophical theses. Lastly he would let Chenn demonstrate to him how target practice had gone with all kinds of projectile weapons. After he was pleased with the result he would spar with Chenn and fight each other with swords and spears. If, he was content with the progress his children were making in each of their respective Sesks he would let them run off to follow the teachings of the Sesk'osima. Inun would learn how to play the lute, whilst Tann would be schooled in dancing during rituals and the most common dances. Chenn would become a true poet and learn how to become a real wordsmith.
Tsu’kagrei (Passing the Gate)
On the day of the twins eighteenth birthday both were summoned to Nabat's chapel where they had to undergo the coming of age ceremony. Once they had arrived at the chapel their mother stood behind an elaborate altar where four bowls of water and two small towels stood waiting for them. The chapel itself had been adorned in bright, vibrant colors specifically to commemorate this event. The small chapel was cramped by the amount of people who were attending. At the time it had seemed like the whole city had shown up to watch the ceremony and see how two of their young and brightest flowed over into another phase of life. Once the two youths had kneeled before the altar the Kiva spoke: "Start with the cleansing.". The Tinari'sai (boy coming of age) and Minari'sai (girl coming of age) washed their hands in the first basin and dried their hands on two small towels, after which they draped it over their arms. They followed up by taking a small sip of water, enough to fill the mouth completely, from the second bowl. Both participants then stood up and offered their bolws to each of their honored quests, these being their family members, in order of age. Starting with the oldest and passing it on to the youngest where they mirrored the actions the youths had taking earlier, starting with the handwashing to continue with the drinking of the water. After that point, the family knelt on the rugs which had been laid out in front of all the other attending guests. The Tinari'said and Minari'said would then replace each of the items on the small table and take a moment to offer their own individual silent prayers to Kik'lekki so they might continue with the ceremony. This part of the ceremony showed the attendees of the ceremony that these young persons have learned to care for themselves and are now ready to care for others.
After this display the Kiva spoke: "Pray to the Four Corners.". As if on queue both Tinari'sai and Minari'sai scooped up a handful of sand from the bowl and lifted them up. In chorus, they chanted: "That which the Mother has given us we offer up in thanks.". They took a burning incense bundle in their left hands and turned their face to the right which resulted in them facing the wall. Their right arms swept upwards to scoop up some smoke towards their face. Again they chanted: "Great Mother, I am humble and small before you. I offer my heart and my spirit. Vahs ka ryma'at (all to the mother of balance).". Again they bowed, turning to their right causing them to face the altar. They would place the incense back on the table in a holder, however, this time the scoop of smoke pressed against their faces as they chanted: "Great Mother, I am whole before you. I offer myself. Vahs ka ryma'at.". This part of the ceremony showed the attendees of the ceremony that these young persons will pray to each of the four directions as they represent each of the stages of life.
Once more the Kiva spoke up: "Prepare the Tea.". Immediately the twins jumped into action as they picked up the silk cloth and folded it in their hands to form a triangular piece of cloth to purify the utensils with. As they picked up the kettle in front of them they poured a tiny amount of hot water into the tea bowl to rinse it. Next they poured the dirty water into the kensui (waste water receptacle). The twins used the linen cloth to wipe down the outside of the bowl. After this they lifted their tea scoops in front of them and used it to fill a small, metal tea holder. Once they filled the tea bowl with hot water they settled the hold into the water and left it their for the time being to steep. This part of the ceremony showed the attendees of the ceremony that these young persons are able to provide for those they care for.
A few minutes of waiting passed in absolute silent before their mother broke the silence: "Serve the tea.". On command both of the younglings grapped a cup as they poured the tea into a cup and offered it to each of their honored guests in order of age. As they did this they whiped the lip of the bowl between each person. When all of them accepted and drank from the tea Inun and Tann drank themselves from the cup before placing it back on the table. This part of the ceremony showed the attendees of the ceremony that these young persons give what they have to others in love and kindness.
The Kiva bowed her head towards the altar as she pressed her fingertips to her heart, lips and then the forehead. As she turned to stand behind the Tinari'sai and Minari'sai, each on their own turn, with her own hands palm up beside the shoulders of the boy and girl. They would lift their hands out in front of them slightly and turn their palms upwards before speaking up: "I leave behind the things I no longer need and make room in my spirit for those I must take on. I will give of myself to the Goddess and my family. My heart will be open to all and my hand ready to serve. Hear my pledge, Kika'lekki, and accept me as your humble servant. One Mother, One Breath, One Spirit, Vahs ka Ryma'at!"
After they both said the pledge the Kiva gently placed her hands on the twin's heads as their mother spoke: "Oh, Great Mother. Guide this young person as they take their first steps away from their family. Guide them on their path with your light, your love and your wisdom. Mother, hold them in your heart as we hold her in ours. One Mother, One Breath, One Spirit, Vahs ka Ryma'at."
As they received their blessing by the Kiva, she would place a bone crest on the younglings. As they received their sign of maturity their mother presented the twins to the gathered crowd in the chapel. "We see this mand and woman as our equal in all things." With this Inun and Tann joined the crowed and engaged in the cermonial joining of hands. The senior members placing their hands on the outside of theirs. They would now outrank those younger than themselves. The ceremony had ended and celebrations followed for the rest of the day.
