Description
Messert is the largest terrestrial planet in the Messert system but has no atmosphere. Due to its distant location from the sun, the surface is frigid and covered with jagged shards of rock and ice that jut wildly from the surface, creating a cavernous and treacherous landscape. Scientists have theorized that this planet may have once had an atmosphere which was destroyed by a catastrophic event, though no hard evidence has yet been found to support this claim. However, local miners have asserted the discoveries of small pockets of breathable air within the expansive cave systems.
Before the rise of the corporate ruling board on Messert V, these caves were often used by pirates and smugglers to prey on the massive number of outgoing raw material shipments due to the widespread mining efforts. However, as the Messert population stabilized and the Messert V corporate government garnered power in-system, legitimate and protected trade established a decisive foothold. While much of the earned income went back to the planet's population, a large portion of the sum went to the purchase of a patrol fleet, consisting of small, quick, yet heavily armed warships. It was this sudden increase in power which eventually proved too much for the pirates and in less than three months almost all attacks on transport ships had ceased.
Several ships from the protection fleet remain in Messert system as a deterrent against threats, though most of the fleet was allegedly sold back to their original owners. However, recent research indicates that most of these ships were never actually returned, and might possibly be hidden somewhere in-system. Regardless, since the early power struggles, planet Messert has become a thriving commerce hub and serves as the center of raw materials for much of the Mytaranor sector.
