Anatomy and Biology
The reek is a large, herbivorous, ungulate native to the grassy plains regions of the largely tropical world of Ylesia. With its two curved horns extending forward from behind the jaw, an additional third horn curving back from the forward portion of its skull, and weighing an average of more than a ton, reeks are impressive and formidable creatures. Their thick, toughened skin, often sporting a rough, pebbly texture, offers these creatures a great deal of natural defense, allowing them to move easily through the thick Ylesian jungles between grazing lands, either for protection during the heat of the day or in search of greener pastures. The coloration of their skin is highly dependent on their diets, with the normal brown taking on various highlighting tones depending on the vegetation they consume, particularly with reeks living and adapting to other worlds across the galaxy.
Behavior
Reeks tend to congregate in moderate sized herds, allowing their calves to be raised more successfully within the protection of the group. Given the placement of the reek's eyes in relation to its lower horns, limiting its vision when it lowers its head to graze, this herd behavior enables the group to keep a better watch over its surroundings. Unsurprisingly, given their appearance, reeks are usually very territorial, defending the areas in which they graze both from rival herds and encroachment by potential predators alike. Males, too, will frequently compete for the females of the herd, initially brandishing their large horns in threat displays and finally locking horns with rivals in fierce competitions, as their flattened snouts allow them to bring all three horns to bear in a charge.
Diet
Domestication
Despite their territorial aggression, reeks have proven popular enough that a large number have been exported from Ylesia to many other worlds over the millennia. Several notable subspecies have emerged as they adapted to their new surroundings, notably the Ithorian, Kashyyyk, and Iridonian reek. When domesticated, reeks make very capable beasts of burden, and the Zabrak of Iridonia adapted the species into a traditional military mount for combat. Other groups have been known to use reeks in gladiatorial exhibitions, altering their diets with the inclusion of meat in such a way that the animals become even more aggressive. Such an animal is usually easy to identify, as its skin will take on reddish tones as their meat intake increases. While popular sport on some worlds, animal rights activists across the galaxy deplore the treatment of these reeks, often seeking what actions they can against the hunters.
Iridonia
During their interstellar travels, Zabraks met the reeks and considered them as excellent candidates for war mounts because they were naturally armoured, and could charge the enemy with their central horn. Therefore they imported them to Iridonia.
Iridonian reek breeding consists of a natural diet of plant matter in order to be healthy enough for war. This diet, added to the harsh Iridonian winds, has given this subspecies a tough, gray skin that help them resist sharp and blunt weapon attacks during battle. Also, the Iridonian reek's horns are much sharper and longer than other reeks, and Zabraks decorate them with tattoos representing its name, pesonality, or the family it belongs to.
Unlike the Ithorian reek, Iridonian reeks are encouraged to fight for dominance and for mates.
Nowadays, the use of reeks in war has declined. However, riding war mounts is still taught in most Iridonian military schools, and reek riding is a familiar sport on this planet.
Ithor
Ithorians use the reeks as plow animals and are larger and stronger than those found on Ylesia. The Ithorian reek is characterised by a yellow skin, which is attributed to its primary diet consisting of yellow flora and bafforr tree leaves.
Keeping in line with the Ithorians’ peaceful nature, reek breeding is carried out to reduce the competition between males. Unlike the Iridonian reeks, which are encouraged to fight for mates, Ithorian reek males and females are separated and isolated during mating periods, and mating is allowed between couples chosen by the breeders. Due to this lack of hostility between male reeks, their horns are smaller than other subspecies.
Kashyyyk
Initially, the farming community faced many difficulties in breeding reeks, or “ryyk” as the Wookiees name them. Many imported reeks died off due to predators and the climate change. Luckily, however, a selected few did survive and then learned to thrive. Thanks to this natural adaptation, Kashyyykian reeks have become an uncommon subspecies and are generally much larger in size than their cousins. Also, their horns are narrower, but longer and stronger.
Ylesia
Here reeks are naturally fierce and belligerant, and have experienced very limited contacts with sentient beings. Reek herds dominate the open plains of Ylesia, and can be seen in the mossy grasslands as well as in the planet’s jungles.
Here the reeks have no natural predators, and while many herds are left pasturing in the wild, Ylesians raise many of them in ranches to use them for many purposes, including their exporting to numerous worlds.
Codian Moon
The moon’s native fauna is similar to the planet Ylesia’s, and the Codian wood-moss is much like the Ylesian variety. For this reason the moon is an ideal location for reek ranches.
Codian reeks were shipped up from the planet generations ago. For many decades they were raised in great numbers for export to the galactic market. Old people here still remembers that reek herds were so numerous in those times that they could be seen from orbit, roaming about the private fields.
Geonosis
Geonosians reeks differ from other subspecies for their dark red leathery skin. As a matter of fact, they are fed meat often in order to make them much more aggressive. Geonosians don’t use reeks for agricultural helpers, rather they employ reeks exclusively for exhibition sport and executions.
