Introduction

A Reek.

Reek Riding originates from the farthest corners of the galaxy, where life in the open field was quite monotonous and people felt the need to add some thrill to their meagre existence. They managed to add this thrill, and quite successfully: as a matter of fact Reek Riding (RR) is a very dangerous sport and lives of participants can suddenly turn from the meagre status to a fatal status. After all, this sport symbolises perfectly the never-ending conflict between the wild and the tame: the more wild a Reek is, the more self-control (tamed mind) the Rider must possess.

Several sentient races have been practicing this time-waster in the galaxy, almost anyone who encountered the Reeks or experienced a Reek migration to their planets. Over the ages this former hobby has become an art, to the point that some consider Reek Riding a noble sport.

Reeks are very imposing animals, some were successful in taming them and use them in battles or as helper in their farms, while some others are more aggressive and dangerous. They are used for cruel and less cruel shows.

The Galactic Reek Riding Association (GRRA) is an affiliated of the Galactic Sports Association (GSA) and consequently complies with the rules for safety, quality standards, fair play, and sensitive treatement for sentients and creatures. Although due care is taken not to harm anyone, Reek Riding can cause serious injuries or even be fatal.

Rules

The Rider must stay on the Reek for as long as 8 (eight) seconds. If the Rider is tossed off the Reek’s back before the 8th second the score is 0, otherwise two judges give a score to both the Reek (max 50 points) and the Rider (max 50 points plus the Reek’s score). When the Rider is bucked off the Reek is still scored. Due to particular causes, judges may give a Rider the option to make a second ride. In this case, the Rider may accept or refuse the option. If the Rider accepts the re-ride, the current score is discarded and only the second score will be valid.

Re-rides

When registering for the single event, Riders must specify what is the minimum score they would accept in case of a re-ride granted by the judges. Example: at the end of the performance the judges’s score is 82 and they give the Rider the option to re-ride. If the Rider’s minimum score accepted were 83, the Rider would reject the score and accept the re-ride option. On the other hand, should the Rider’s minimum score accepted had been 82, that Rider would have accepted the score and refused the re-ride option.

Note that there are two rounds and a final round in each event. If the Rider must take a different decision depending on which round it’s being played, this must be specified clearly.

Disqualification

It is possible for a Rider to be disqualified during an event. Score will be 0 (zero) and the Rider stops taking part in that event. The Rider can enter the next scheduled event, however.

Events

Each event consists of an unlimited number of riders. Each event consists of 2 (two) rounds for each Rider, followed by a final round restricted to those riders who accumulated the 10 highest scores.

Each Reek is ridden only once per event; Reeks are drawn randomly for each Rider.

Invitations

The Top Riders may receive automatic invitation to each event (entry fee is not due). The Champion of the previous season in a specific event is always invited – if able – to take part in the same event the next season. From the second season on, invitations for the first event (Iridonian Inaugural Challenge) are based on the previous season’s standings. The total number of Top Riders invited is equal to 1:4, with a maximum of 20 invitations.

Point System

During the ride, the two judges can award 0-50 points each to both the Rider and the Reek. Reek scores and buckoffs are recorded for each event in order to choose the best Reeks for the Finals and to award the Best Reek of the Season. In case of a full ride, the Reek’s score is added to the Rider’s. At the end of the second round, individual scores are summed up (combined points) and those who earned the top 10 scores enter the final round.

The score obtained in the final round is used to determine the final ranking (scores of the two previous rounds are discarded). Rank points are assigned according to the table below, then bonus points for mounts and full rides are added. The event Champion is the Rider with the most points in the final round. In case of a tie after points, a tie-break round is done with another random draw for each ex-aequo first place.

The Top 10 Riders earn points for rank, mounts, and 8-second rides as follows:

Rank Points
1 50
2 40
3 35
4 30
5 25
6 20
7 15
8 10
9 7
10 5

In case of ties in ranks, points will be added together and split evenly. Decimals will be truncated. Example: 2nd and 3rd positions are tied; 40 + 35 = 75 pts divided by 2 positions = 37.5 which gives 37 points to both the 2nd and 3rd place.

  • For each mount: 5 points
  • For each 8-second ride: 10 points

Purse Distribution

For each event, the purse is 80% of entry fees plus sponsorships and donations, if any. Depending on the number of registered participants, purse is as follows:

  • 1 to 5 entries: pay 1 (one) place;
  • 6 to 10 entries: pay 2 (two) places;
  • 11 to 15 entries: pay 3 (three) places;
  • 16 to 22 entries: pay 4 (four) places;
  • 23 to 28 entries: pay 5 (five) places;
  • 29 to 34 entries: pay 6 (six) places;
  • 35 to 40 entries: pay 7 (seven) places;
  • 41 to 45 entries: pay 8 (eight) places;
  • 46 to 50 entries: pay 9 (nine) places;
  • 51 or more entries: pay 10 (ten) places.

Purse is divided as follows:

  • 1 Place: 100%
  • 2 Places: 60% 40%
  • 3 Places: 50% 30% 20%
  • 4 Places: 40% 27% 20% 13%
  • 5 Places: 35% 25% 19% 13% 8%
  • 6 Places: 30% 25% 19% 13% 8% 5%
  • 7 Places: 25% 21% 18% 14% 10% 7% 5%
  • 8 Places: 23% 19% 17% 14% 11% 7% 5% 4%
  • 9 Places: 21% 18% 16% 14% 11% 8% 5% 4% 3%
  • 10 Places: 20% 18% 16% 13% 10% 8% 6% 4% 3% 2%

Distribution may vary from season to season and after prior notice if other percentages are found to be of interest for both the organisation and the participants.

Registration

Male and female sentient beings can enroll, and will participate in the same events with the same regulations. It is possible to organise separate rankings, if wished.

For the first registration to the GRRA, all participants must provide their biographical data. Each Rider must pay a Season Licence of 1,000,000 credits (must be renewed every season).

Entry Fees

To participate in an event, each Rider must pay an entry fee of 20,000 credits. Only invited participants are exempt from the event entry fee. All entry fees and additional fees are to be paid in cash to Ruben Wan, specifying clearly the reason and details of payment (e.g. Entry fee for RR event #3; Registration for Season 1 of Reek Riding + entry fees for me and Tim Tom, and so on). The entry fee is non refundable when the event has started.

The entry deadline is three days before the scheduled date (e.g.: event is on Day 40, the Rider must sign in and pay the entry fee within Day 37). No late registrations shall be accepted. If the event is suspended or cancelled for any reason, registered participants will be refunded their entry fee.

In addition to the entry fee, Riders are reminded to specify what is the minimum score(s) they would accept in case of a re-ride granted by the judges. Lack of such communication implies that the re-ride option will never be accepted. Please state the minimum score(s) upon payment.

Teams

Registered riders can associate themselves in teams, if they wish. Teams can be composed of PCs and/or NPCs (Resident type only) members. Each member must be in good standings with the GRRA fees and obligations. A member cannot be in two or more teams simultaneously. A member cannot change team during the Season.

To register a team, follow the rules below:

  • Each team must have a proper name (not offensive and in-context with the sport) and a three-letter/digit tag.
  • Not more than 5 (five) members are allowed in a team. One-member teams are not possible.
  • Each team must always have one team leader who will take care of its administration with the GRRA.

Send the above-mentioned information by DM to Ruben Wan (team name and tag, member names, team leader name).

Note that GRRA cannot be held responsible for problems concerning teams' internal affairs, and all problems must be solved without the intervention of GRRA officials. Failure to do so means the exclusion from the GRRA circuit of any team involved in the issue.

Breeding Reeks for Events

GRRA uses its own reeks in its events, but it fosters and encourage breeders to provide their reeks. Reek owners can register their reeks (http://www.swcombine.com/rules/?Creatures&ID=443) to be ridden during the season. Owners shall not be paid, but their reeks can become famous and win prizes, thus increasing their value on the galactic market. GRRA will keep a public list of IDs and will guarantee buyers that the reek on sale is the actual reek used in the GRRA events. Transfers of ownership are forbidden while the Season is in progress.

Reek owners willing to have their animals take part in a GRRA season must assign Ruben Wan as Master. Their names will be tagged appropriately by the GRRA officials to make each Reek unique. Skills for each reek will be created randomly. The name of the Reek can (and should) be chosen by the owner. Under no circumstances Riders can ride reeks they own, or reeks breeded from their same team.

Sponsorships and Donations

Sponsorships from companies are accepted in the form of cash or assets. Various forms of sponsorship are possible, and would-be sponsors must contact the GRRA (Ruben Wan) to set the details.

Private donations are accepted and will be used as indicated by the donor or to increase the purse of the next event.

Special Events

Outside of the GRRA Circuit, other events can be organised. They may follow the GRRA rules or adopt variants. One of these special events was held between Day 200 and Day 202 of Year 15 on the Codian Moon as a tribute to Gamba Jaboli. Offered by Damij Maximus, this event gathered 23 riders in the Gamba Jaboli Memorial Competition.
