Family background
The Thallans are a minor, local noble house, hailing from Selab. In the year -6, local court politics left them in a mild form of banishment, as they were allowed to keep their estate in the Hapes Cluster, as long as they maintained the proper semblance of being “exiled”. As their new home, they chose Republica, at the request of Kalarr, who has long harboured some sympathies to the republican cause. His wife, while sharing none of her husband’s enthusiasm, treated it as a harness enough hobby for the duration of their banishment. The rest of the family - including the cousins and other relatives also disfavoured at home - suspected the matriarch had some other, hidden motives for moving to the Outer Rim.
Life in the Republic
The family wealth allowed, not very impressive for the standards of the Hapan Cluster, translated into fairly wealthy existence in the outside galaxy. However, the family did not really get along, slowly splitting into factions. The matron Orchadia, while keeping a social presence on Republica, used her skills and influence to lessen the harshness of the - already symbolic - banishment to make it possible for Ayra to enroll in the Royal Hapan Military Academy on Ut. The young Thallan graduated and joined the Navy.
Meanwhile, the family members closer to Kalarr grew more and more fond of the resistance, and later - the New Republic. The father started giving lectures on philosophy and art in various institutes of Republica, while Arlen was groomed by private tutors to follow Kalarr’s footsteps into academia. This, however, was not to happen.
The Academy
Arlen Thallan did join the Academy on Republica, but not the liberal arts department. To the displeasure of his father, he enrolled into the officer’s course and excelled in astrogation and tactics, graduating with honours and earning an additional specialty as weapons engineer.
While his academic score had set him on a fast track to the commission, his service record has been varied. While receiving praise for his performance as a tactical officer, secondary helmsman and astrogator, his file has quickly accumulated reprimands for going AWOL and behaviour unbecoming of an officer. No incident was serious enough to warrant a discharge, but the sum of them were more than sufficient to slow his progress through the ranks.
Family departure
After the Betrayal and the fall of the New Republic, the last members of the Thallan family were allowed to return to the Hapan Cluster. The only one who decided to stay was Arlen. As a farewell gift, he was given the personal ship of his father’s - the Feegharp, a KR-4B cruiser, with his Kalarr’s private database, journals and physical books. Along with them, the young officer received some business ventures that the family members managed to form while working outside the Cluster. These, in turn, made him an owner of a small set of merchant and combat ships. The main vessel of this modest fleet was a Corona-class frigate Angelard, tasked with protecting merchant convoys through the poorly chartered and dangerous routes of the Outer Rim.
