'Freelance' is a common definition used in the galaxy to indicate a sentient being that is not employed in any company, or is not a citizen of any government. The status of freelance is seen by some as something to be avoided at all costs, while others find their own fulfillment in this way of life.
Socially speaking, freelancers are generally neither feared nor hated by the other sentients beings. Rather, they are most often ignored. From time to time small to medium companies try to recruit freelancers, and while a few find a new home and decide to stay and work, many more quit their jobs and return to an unemployed status.
