Azumi`ryu Rasa (also known as Azumi’ryu’rasa or Miryura) is a female Chiss currently serving as a senior councilor in the Chiss Ascendancy. She is also part of House H`zebi and currently acts as their Speaker.

Early Life

Miryura was born on Day 58 of Year 3 to Azumi’ke’llma and Azumi’rel’ialas on a now-lost colony in the Unknown Regions. During the chaos of the Chiss Civil Dispute 10 years prior to Miryura’s birth, the Azumi family lost contact with many of their members on colony worlds and Csilla itself. An invading pirate force attacked the primary colony of the Azumi and survivors were forced to flee into the Chaos.

Led by Miryura’s mother, Mirelia, House Azumi spent two years trying to survive on the fringes of the Unknown Regions before establishing a small colony on an unclaimed ice moon. Members of House Azumi scraped out a living on the moon for half a decade as they tried to reestablish contact with the rest of the Ascendancy, but turmoil across Chiss Space and the difficulties of navigating the Unknown Regions made such attempts unsuccessful.

Miryura was born on the unnamed ice colony labeled X21-36 by House Azumi and spent the first three years of her life there. By age four, her connection to the Force was discovered and she quickly began training to become a sky-walker, a navigator who helps guide Chiss ships through the tangled web of the Chaos hyperspace lanes. While Chiss typically waited until children were a bit older to begin training and utilizing them as sky-walkers, the desperate situation the Azumi found themselves in forced Miryura into service earlier than most.

By age five, she was assigned to the Advertent Traveler, a corvette that served as an exploration, trade and defense vessel for House Azumi. She served as the ship’s sky-walker for five years, spending most of her time on board the vessel away from the Azumi colony. During her time as the Traveler’s sky-walker, she underwent a rigorous training regimen instituted by her mother and carried out by her caregiver, Azumi’tama’lanos. Though she was not allowed to be privy to the many tasks carried out by the Traveler, the curious young Chiss often went out of her way to discover as much as she could about missions, much to the annoyance of her caregiver and amusement of the ship’s captain, Azumi’tan’reyen. Miryura had little interaction with other children of her own age during this time, but seemed largely unbothered by the fact, content with her holobooks or interactions with the ship’s crew.

Captain Milananre, the strict but fair leader of the Traveler, seemed to have a soft spot for Miryura, and often indulged his sky-walker’s curiosity. The young Chiss quickly became enamored with the in’s and out’s of the Traveler, how it worked, what made it click, and Milananre fed those interests by personally teaching Miryura the basics of starship operation and maintenance.

Given the amount of time spent away on voyages, Miryura viewed Captain Milananre and the crew of the Traveler as her immediate family and the closely knit crew of the Traveler seemed to have similar feelings towards her. The exception seemed to be the oft-exasperated Mitamala, who was less than pleased with Miryura’s increased exposure to the rest of the crew.

The X33-01 Event

Despite the desperate situation House Azumi found themselves in, the five years Miryura spent as a sky-walker were, from her young perspective, exciting and interesting. However, everything came to a sudden crashing halt after something that is mentioned in the House Azumi records as “the X33-01 Event.” Details as to what happened are sparse but what is known is as follows: the Advertent Traveler was dispatched on an exploratory mission of a barren and uninhabited planet labeled as X33-01 in search of potential mineral veins. However, when the ship returned, all the crew were found killed in disturbing fashion across the ship and all records after its departure were purged. The sole survivor was Miryura, who had seemingly guided the Traveler back to the colony by herself. The shocked child could not recount anything that had happened, despite numerous questioning sessions, and with House Azumi’s limited resources and many pressing problems, the investigation quickly fell apart without many answers.

Fracturing Ties

Miryura’s Second and Third Sight abilities fell into perhaps permanent dormancy following the incident, ending her days as a sky-walker. Two years after the X33-01 Event, House Azumi made contact with Lesser Space and discovered that the remnants of the Ascendancy still existed on Csilla. However, what remained of Chiss space remained in chaos, prompting House Azumi to prepare for an eventual homecoming but to remain in the Chaos for the time being, continuing trade with the allies they had made while in exile and those in Lesser Space.

With the potential to return to Chiss society on the horizon, and steps towards a slow reintegration already being made, Miryura’s tutelage saw a shift. While she was allowed to attend basic classes with her peers, her time afterwards was filled with lessons with specialized tutors. Though some subjects like advanced physics and mathematics came easy to her, those focusing on the etiquette and social engineering necessary to navigate the dangerous web of Chiss politics did not. Even more secretive lessons were held, those involving personal defense and combat, but Miryura’s memories of these are vague at best. Expectations for Miryura to take up a key position with the House, potentially following Mirelia as matriarch, were set and were often suffocating, especially given the rigorous schedule she was to follow.

Miryura grew to despise both the lessons and expectations but could not break free of either; her sense of responsibility and loyalty to the Azumi was too great. Her relationship with her mother continued to fracture as a result, however.

It reached a breaking point soon after Miryura’s graduation from the academy. In the intervening years, House Azumi had established a reputable shipping and mining company in Lesser and Chiss Space and had abandoned the colony on X21-36 to the Chaos, returning to Csilla. Following her graduation, Miryura was placed in charge of one of the Azumi fleet’s key shipping vessels, both as a quick promotion and a way to placate the young Chiss growing increasingly frustrated with expectations to join the world of business and politics. Putting Miryura back in space turned out to be a smart move by her parents; while she was somewhat overwhelmed by the responsibility of leading a crew, the fact that she was able to return to a life of exploring the hyperlanes eased some of her growing reservations.

It was not long before the situation soured, however. During negotiations with a client, Miryura’s crew came under the scrutiny of the wealthy oligarch making the purchase. Rather than agree to the terms of the client, Miryura vehemently denied them, effectively ending the deal.

Prepared to suffer the repercussions of the failed deal, Miryura was surprised when she initially faced none. However, when she discovered that her mother had instead placed the blame at the feet of her crew instead, one voluntarily taking the blame himself and losing his position, Miryura was beside herself. She fought to have the crew members reinstated by the company but found herself walled off at every turn by Mirelia. Eventually, Miryura resigned herself and decided to leave House Azumi behind forever.

Joining the Chiss Ascendancy

With no real relationships with anyone outside of House Azumi and lacking the support of her family, Miryura had few choices for where to go next. The decision to leave Azumi had been brash, especially for one such as herself, with no real plan of action for what would follow. What she knew was that she wanted to be amongst the stars, and, if possible, help her fellow Chiss in the process.

Having these two goals in mind and few options available to her, the decision to join the Chiss Expansionary Defense Force as a pilot seemed the obvious one. Though putting her life in danger or potentially taking that of another gave her some pause, the idea of putting her skills to use in service of the Chiss people while also being able to return to space won out. The military life would not be so different from what she had experienced during those years under the command of Captain Milananre on the Advertent Traveler, or so she hoped.

Having little to her name but hoping to start anew, Miryura signed on as a pilot for the Chiss Ascendancy in Year 23. She tackled her initial training with the same focus and rigor that had served her well in the academy and quickly distinguished herself in the starfighter combat simulations. Passing through her warrior trials with flying colors, Miryura was assigned as a pilot to Csihehn Squadron and given the callsign Csihehn Nine.

Much to her surprise, she was given a small command over her flight, which included pilots Ellianna, Csihehn Ten, Staaen, Csihehn Eleven, and Pravos, Csihehn Twelve. While somewhat uncomfortable with a leadership position, given her previous experience, she set out to tackle the task with the same determination to succeed that she dedicated towards all her tasks.

The Reclamation of Chiss Space

During the time of her enlistment, the Seventh Chiss Ascendancy was in the midst of reestablishing itself after years under the yoke of the New Republic. Now free to govern themselves, the Ascendancy began moving rapidly to update their maps of the Csilla system and the surrounding Chaos.

Miryura and her squadron were assigned to the vessel the Enlighten, which was deployed to assist in these operations. For many months, the crew of the Enlighten scoured through the Chaos, mapping what they found and hoping to perhaps rediscover some of their missing colonies. It reminded Miryura a bit of her time with the Advertent Traveler, exploring the unknown, perhaps too much so.

It was during this time that Miryura was thrust into her first combat situation. After the collapse caused by the Chiss Civil Dispute and during the rule of the New Republic, the fringes of Chiss Space had become home to a number of mercenary and pirate groups that would prey upon civilian freighters. With little resources dedicated towards wrangling in these outlaws, they had thrived, setting up various operations in asteroid belts throughout the sector. While mapping out the sector was the Enlighten’s primary objective, clearing out pirates when they were discovered was also part of their mandate.

There were numerous skirmishes fought among the asteroid fields of the Chaos and the exploits of Csihehn Squadron soon became known among those privy to the operation. The tactics and firepower of the Ascendancy fleet was far superior to anything mustered by the pirate sects they hunted, but Csihehn was especially effective, failing to lose even a single fighter across the entire campaign.

The success meant promotions for many upon the completion of the operation and a return to Csilla. Miryura was among those who received recognition for her work and she was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant near the end of Year 23.

Her service record had caught the attention of Prard`aga Rono, who at the time was the Patriarch of House Hzebi. Dagaro extended an invitation to House H`zebi and while Miryura felt somewhat disillusioned by the idea of joining another House so quickly after leaving her own, she realized that being without one was a difficult path to walk in Chiss society. With that in mind, Miryura accepted Dagaro’s proposal and joined H`zebi in Year 23.

Expanding Horizons

After securing their own space, the Ascendancy set out to expand their influence into the Lesser Space. Miryura’s squadron was assigned escort duties for freighters hauling key materials between Csilla and a new colony.

The work was far less exciting than the exploration of the Chaos, which came with both boons and banes. While oftentimes boring, it was also a welcome break from the stress of battle. With time to reflect, Miryura was somewhat surprised at how well she had handled being in live combat, though she recognized that she had been somewhat sheltered from the worst of it. After all, her squadron had suffered no losses and it was far easier to disassociate from the violence of her actions while in a cockpit.

Either way, the escort missions were a good change of pace. They also created more opportunities for Miryura to make connections both among the Chiss and in Lesser Space.
