Rens de Saffia comes from the planet of Serenno in the D'astan sector. As his surname suggests, he was born and raised in the Serennian city of Saffia where his family had lived for many generations. The De Saffias stem from an old aristocratic Serennian bloodline that saw its fortunes rise and fall like the tides of the Belsallian Sea throughout history. At the time of Rens' birth, the family was a middle-class household of bankers, lawyers, and entrepreneurs.

Growing up in the city of Saffia on Serenno, Rens was sent to good schools which enabled him to develop himself intellectually and harness skills that would help him navigate the world of finance and politics. Throughout his early adolescence, Rens took part in a local legislative youth program and various community service initiatives to further hone his talents and sharpen his ambitions. At the start of Year 24, Rens became twenty-one years old and took his first steps in forging his own destiny by leaving his homeworld of Serenno.

Currently, Rens is a citizen of the Confederacy of Independent Systems and has employed himself within its civilian sector, specifically in the production branch. In addition, his talent in writing earned him a position as a journalist within the leading news agency of the Confederacy, the CIS Shadowfeed.

Biography

Origins (Pre-Year 3)

Rens was born into the De Saffia household, which is a family that stems from an old aristocratic bloodline from the planet Serenno that stretches back far into the Old Republic era. As their family name suggests, the De Saffias have always been closely tied to the city of Saffia, which is one of the three largest metropolises on Serenno alongside Carannia and Fiyarro. Preserved family records indicate that the De Saffias already played a role in Serennian politics during the Great Galactic War between the Republic and Sith Empire roughly four millennia ago. Yet, over the course of Serennian history, the fortunes of the De Saffia family ebbed and flowed like the tides of the Belsallian Sea. They went through periods of growth and expansion of political influence and capital, as well as through times of crisis and decline, or even falling entirely into obscurity for a couple of generations.

Since the end of the Clone Wars, the fortunes of the De Saffia family had been slowly rising once more. Its members became firmly entrenched within the Serennian middle-class, and held positions in reputable professions such as within banking, the legal system, and private entrepreneurship.

Early life (Year 3 - Year 24)

In the first month of Year 3, Rens was born to Heylen de Saffia - a financial advisor at one of the banks of Saffia and a local politician - and her husband Ossav de Saffia (née Verassi) who was a corporate lawyer. Three years later, the couple had a second child, namely Rens' sister who was named Demy. Rens and Demy grew up within the city of Saffia at their parent's apartments, which were only a stone's throw away from the main De Saffia residence in the city. As their parents were prospering individuals, the De Saffia siblings grew up in a privileged environment, and were sent to the best schools in Saffia. As Rens proved to have a keen financially-oriented and politically savvy mind, much of his education was focused on following in the footsteps of his mother. At the age of fourteen, he joined a local legislative youth program alongside his regular education and remained an active member for four years. His membership enabled him to travel across a number of worlds near Serenno and the D'astan sector which held associate status with the legislative youth program. As he regularly travelled to worlds or systems where Galactic Basic wasn't the primary language, Rens became proficient in both Durese and Huttese during this period of his life.

While attending to his responsibilities in the legislative youth group, Rens also regularly volunteered in various community service initiatives that the city administration of Saffia organised. For example, at the age of fifteen he helped set up and manage a group of well-to-do young people who actively acted to combat littering within the streets of Saffia, and which also collected funds for the preservation and expansion of greenery within the city. Another example of his community service activities was when Rens was the treasurer for a group of privileged Serennian youths that purchased meals for orphanages and hospitals in Saffia and surrounding cities and towns, and helped distribute them.

When Rens turned twenty-one years in Year 24, he had finished his academic development and was expected to leave the family home and begin building his own career and future without depending on family wealth and ties. This was the customary rite of passage that every De Saffia family member had to go through to prove to their kin that they would be an asset to the family and not a burden upon it. As such, Rens departed his homeworld of Serenno near the start of Year 24, and attended a number of recruitment events in the D'astan and neighbouring sectors to find a profession to pursue. It was during these events that he came in contact with recruiters from the Confederacy of Independent Systems and employed himself within its civilian branch, and simultaneously applied for citizenship status within the Confederacy.

Current career (Year 24 - Present)

After attending a brief orientation and passing the necessary state exams, Rens was granted citizenship within the Confederacy of Independent Systems in Year 24. Shortly thereafter, he was employed within the Confederacy's civilian sector and took up a respectable position within its production branch. The Serennian was assigned to the Northern Territories of the CIS, with his first posting being in the Sprizen sector. During his early days with the Confederacy, Rens' talent and love for writing became known to his superiors, who brought him into contact with the CIS Shadowfeed, the primary news agency of the Confederacy. After working on a couple of trial articles and seeing them published, De Saffia was hired as a junior journalist, alongside his duties within the CIS production sector.

Appearance

Rens is a human male in his early twenties. By most objective standards, he can be considered a handsome man in large part due to his symmetrical and chiselled facial features, as well as his charming disposition. He has blonde hair of short length, grey eyes, and a medium skin complexion. The sharpness of his broad jawline is highlighted by a well-kept stubble.

Standing 1.86 meters tall, Rens has an above average height for a human. He has broad shoulders and a relatively slim waist, giving him a typically mesomorph body type. He maintains his slim physique and toned muscles through regular exercise. Rens has a diverse style of clothing, being able to pull off both a casual look as well as an elegant and distinguished one.

A contemplative & pragmatic man.

Personality

Rens can be described as a man with a contemplative nature and pragmatic mindset. The objective facts carry more weight than antiquated customs or traditions in his opinion, and he will always favour reasonable analysis and deduction over blind faith in an ideal or belief. Yet, despite his practical demeanour, Rens is a man with natural charm and charisma.

Nonetheless, Rens' pragmatic nature also has a darker side. His dedication to acting upon that which he concludes to be logical and practical can make him appear callous or ruthless and even utilitarian at times.

Yet, despite his natural inclination to choose objectivity over tradition, he follows the customs of his family and the community they lived in, as he considers them beneficial to achieving his goals and ambitions. Similarly, he does not wish to be considered an outcast in Serennian society. As the De Saffia family has practiced ancestor worship for generations, Rens was also raised within this faith, albeit maintaining a largely formal and loose affiliation with it these days.

Relationships

Rens has identified as a bisexual man for as long as he can remember. While he didn't have any serious long-term relationships as of yet, he had a number of brief flings and romantic encounters with peers of both genders as a youth on Serenno. While Rens claims to appreciate both men and women equally in terms of attraction, his romantic interests were more often male than female throughout his late teenage years and early adolescence.

In terms of family relationships, Rens remains on good terms with his parents and has a deep fondness for his sister Demy. Throughout his childhood and early adolescence, he maintained a regular but formal relationship with the extended De Saffia family as was usually the case in large families. Yet, since embarking on his rite of passage to forge his own career and future without relying on his kin’s wealth or ties, he has had little to no contact with either his close family, or the remaining De Saffias.
