Native to Alderaan, the great thranta is one of the largest beasts of burden in the galaxy. Besides its large size, the great thranta differs from other thranta subspecies due to its long neck, proportionally small head and the white colouring of its skin. The diet of these docile creatures is based mainly on airborne zooplankton and other small flying creatures. They also have broad, muscular wings accompanied by a relatively short tail. Their size, ability to fly and compliant nature have helped make the great thranta a convenient way of traveling long distances.
During the taming process, great thrantas are taught a series of aerial maneuvers by handlers and are conditioned to respond to various tugs on a strap fastened across the creature's mouth. The handler is normally situated inside a compartment or harness strapped at the back of beast's head, while a passenger compartment will often be hanging below the belly of the beast.
Wealthy beings from across the galaxy often procure these beasts of burden as both a personal transport and a symbol of social standing. The cost of a youngling or an egg is an expensive luxury, making them a popular target of both hunters and poachers. Their popularity, coupled with the large expense and difficulty of caring for them, lead to wild populations almost becoming extinct. However, due to environmentalist organizations and breeders, great thrantas have become a relatively common sight flying above large open expanses of grassland plateaus on many planets.
