Orvix Sorr (born Year -10 Day 165) is a Qiraash broker and the head of Vantaris Relay, a small independent enterprise engaged in freight, introductions and commercial intelligence while occasionally handling illicit cargo. Orvix assumed control after the disappearance of his parents, Veyra and Darev Sorr, in Year 11. His career has included questionable illicit contracts, a breach of the family's private records and covert approaches to arms brokerage. He has sought information about his parents while keeping the operation independent of the larger criminal organisations with which some of his intermediaries claim connections. No affiliation with those organisations has been confirmed.

Biography

Sorr-ing Prospects

Orvix was born on the 165th day of Year -10 in Korunaan, the capital of Qiraa. The city's starports and system of combining education with business suited his parents, whose respectable freight and introductions firm brought visitors from beyond the Druess sector into their home. Veyra Sorr cultivated those visitors, remembering family troubles as readily as commercial preferences. Darev Sorr kept the accounts and made his son explain the terms of every agreement he was allowed to see as a form of education and discipline in equal measure. Their household was affectionate and prosperous, but its hospitality came with expectations. Orvix learned early that a conversation over dinner might be as consequential as a signed contract. At eight, Orvix began his foray into family operations by recording which guests arrived together, which left separately and those who sought entry which not been invited. Veyra indulged the exercise until Orvix began inadvertently repeating his observations in front of visitors; thereafter she taught him that noticing a secret did not entitle him to reveal it. Darev took a different approach, asking the boy to work out what each guest wanted and what the family would owe if it helped. The lessons made Orvix attentive and socially confident, but also left him prone to weighing even friendly gestures for their possible use or manipulation.

In Year 2, when Orvix was twelve, holfeeds noted that Cloud Carbine left the Night Thieves and established Paradox Resource Exploration. The Sorr household followed the new mining concern as its growing clientele of small traders hoped to buy its mineral output and needed brokers to find purchasers beyond their usual routes. Carbine's move from a criminal group into mining fascinated the family, a facination that only grew as Carbine and his fellow investors formed a conglomerate with JUGANOTH Mining and Cloud City Mining. This expansion allowed the family enterprise, known formally as the Vantaris Relay, to grow its information network under the guise of mining purchases and trade routes, growing commercial operations that Darev tasks Orvix with assisting in documenting and archiving of important agreements and documentation.

When Orvix was fifteen, Darev took him south to Quatalone to review a proposed freight contract. The city's distinctive distilled fish beverage was exported from Qiraa but prohibited in a number of destination systems. Darev had him compare the rules at each end of the proposed journey before discussing the price to ensure the logistical and regulatory risks were outweighed by the commercial benefits of such a nefarious transaction. Despite numerous proposals and recommendations, the contract did not go forward, and Orvix was not told whether his father considered the cargo too risky or the purchaser too difficult to verify. The journey gave him a practical example of how a lawful sale at its point of origin could become an illicit delivery elsewhere. Declining a shipment did not necessarily end the family's relationship with its buyer but simply presented another opportunity thanks to the initial introductions, a process Orvix took in stride.

After Zorran Black's Myorzo Corporation acquired Paradox on Year 5 Day 159, trade routes became regulated and investments went missing, thanks in part to the duplicitous nature of the leadership. This change caused the Vantaris Relay substantial financial losses, forcing efforts in information brokerage to grow in an effort to fill the void of revenue. As the family traveled to to the Tion Cluster during the period of the Dellalt Conflict, Darev and Veyra made the prudent decision to begin establishing links within the various branches of the New Anzat Order Government, and the Hapan Corsortium, in a concentrated effort to begin embedding agents and operatives within both sides of the conflict, while also using Hapan linked into the Imperial Union and the Galactic Empire. While his parents undertook the high risk operations, Orvix was placed as a figurehead in a small, Outer-Rim logistical operation to act as a legitimate face for the Vantaris Relay to keep up appearances. His formal schooling in Korunaan continued alongside this work. By sixteen, he was trusted to compare public manifests with the private records behind them. Those records showed that legitimate freight contracts often served a second purpose: an introduction, a discreet message or the movement of goods whose owner preferred to remain unknown. These messages were not only teaching Orvix the intricacies of humanoid emotion and need, but practical skills on bypassing governmental protocols without detection or suspicion.

When his studies were not occupying his time and his parents were indisposed with their operations, Orvix would spend his time reviewing what he could of the family business archives. Codenames and contacts, past operations and failed investments, the codexes provided a glimpse at hindsight and lessons for improvement to not repeat the mistakes of his family in the past. The archive also held accounts of the failed attempt to gain a foothold on Lorell through corporate fronts and the response of the Hapes Consortium. Orvix had been a young teenager when the affair unfolded in Year 3; reading its records years later, he saw how quickly a commercial façade could become a public liability. Older accounts of the First Galactic Civil War showed a wider version of the same problem: contracts drawn under one government could become liabilities under its successor. Orvix was regularly left frustrated however due to impenetrable encryption on numerous feeds and key archival documents, never providing a full picture of events in most cases.

Bargains and Succession

On Year 9 Day 221, aged nineteen, Orvix made his first independent sale of shipping intelligence at a private gathering on Qiraa, operating solely for himself. He believed he was selling a schedule that would help a buyer make a timely bid. The buyer used it to undercut a smaller carrier, which lost a contract on which its crew had depended. Orvix had honored the terms of his own agreement and had been paid, yet he could not dismiss the result, instead seizing the opportunity to use an alternative buyer from his family's archive to create an additional opportunity for repeat business. Veyra approved of his effort to repair the relationship; but Darev voiced disapproval as he pointed out that the replacement contract did not restore the carrier's position with its original client. Despite the difference of opinion, neither forbade Orvix from taking further work. He began handling selected introductions, first with his parents nearby and then alone, learning to distinguish a profitable agreement from one whose consequences the family could bear. The carrier accepted the replacement work but declined Orvix's next offer of shipping intelligence. That refusal mattered to him more than the cost of compensation: his attempt to restore the balance of the transaction had not restored confidence in him. He became more exact about what information a buyer was purchasing and what a third party might lose if it was used. This did not end his work in the private side of the family business. It made him more selective about the clients to whom he would sell an advantage.

A questioning transaction.

The Corporate Sector Authority's collapse in Year 10 returned the old Paradox matter to the family office. Max Solusar, who had led both the Authority and Paradox, died during the Galactic Empire's takeover; Inwe Ventidius then assumed leadership of the mining concern. A former contact asked Darev to certify that Vantaris Relay had once cleared a mineral lot on Paradox's behalf, hoping to establish a claim amid the change of control. Orvix found only the trader's instructions and the family's refusal to release the disputed cargo. Darev declined to certify a delivery that had never occurred, despite the prospect of recovering the fee lost years earlier. As he attempted to relay this information to the contact, his calls went unanswered. Newsfeeds provided no information on missing persons, instead the matter disappeared. Sometime after, on the 214th day of the eleventh recognised galactic year, Veyra and Darev disappeared. Their last dealings have not been conclusively reconstructed, and no account has established whether they left willingly or were taken. Orvix received the records they had left behind, but a folio identifying the guarantors of several sensitive agreements was missing. The absence was troubling for a more immediate reason than the search for his parents: without those names, he could not tell which promises Vantaris Relay was still expected to honour.

At a rare loss for answers, Orvix had every effort to maintain order while scanning intelligence networks for information on his parents. The family's wealth gave Orvix room to meet ordinary expenses, but it could not make distant contacts accept his authority. Some refused his calls; others offered him new work through extortion, only if he disclosed the clients in his parents' archive. He rejected the latter offers, closed contracts he could no longer verify and paid outstanding couriers before settling his own claims. The smaller operation that remained was easier to supervise, though each departure made the search for his parents more difficult. He had fewer people who might remember their last movements, and less influence with which to question them. The changing of the guard also presented other complications for him, complications within the hired help. Couriers and brokers were kept in the dark, and as information was sparse and questions went unanswered, disgruntled contractors began to indiscriminately leak information, including client lists. While the reputational impact was minor, explained away by grand promises, credit transfers and information, Orvix grew curious at the linkage between intrusions and the Imperial Security Bureau. While he could speculate that his parents may have been taken by operatives inside the Galactic Empire, his desire for information and answers against the limitless supply of Imperial propaganda meant clarity was near impossible.

Orvix formally took command on Year 13 Day 236, at twenty-three. By then Vantaris Relay consisted of a few dependable couriers, contracts dispersed across small systems and clients who trusted him personally rather than a company name. He kept the search for Veyra and Darev separate from his public business, maintaining small holofeed links afloat to receive constant updates when he had time to digest the information. The Fourth Imperial Civil War had unfolded less than three months after his parents vanished. Its brief use of a medical company as a front for moving personnel and assets drew Orvix's attention when he later examined the family's dealings, but he found no evidence connecting Veyra or Darev to the coup. The episode did influence his administration: he began asking who ultimately controlled a contracting company, not merely who signed on its behalf. Several prospective clients declined to answer. He lost their work and retained the uncomfortable possibility that his parents had accepted comparable agreements without recording all of their principals.

Personal Life

The pleasure of a business meeting.

The Vantaris Relay remains centred on Qiraa in the Druess sector, with work distributed among smaller systems rather than concentrated in one conspicuous holding. After the discovery of the Iego system in Year 14, Orvix developed contacts in the Ash Worlds as well. Its ordinary services include arranging freight, introducing buyers to suppliers and settling difficult transactions. Its private work draws on shipping information, personal introductions and couriers who can move cargo without drawing unnecessary attention. The firm has no known claim to territory or large military force. Orvix favours meeting clients in person. His appearance at formal receptions and fashionable clubs gives him access to people who would be harder to reach through a business office, while his charm and flirtation often soften the beginning of a negotiation. He is more guarded about trust than his public manner suggests. The loss of his parents left him reluctant to place the whole network, or his own safety, in any one associate's hands.

Orvix has considered placing Vantaris Relay within a larger criminal enterprise to gain access to resources, intelligence and operational support, and to reduce his visibility as the sole principal behind its private work. Independent intermediaries have claimed to have buyers within Black Sun, the Eidola Pirates and the Zann Consortium. He has passed limited information through such channels, but the final recipients have not been verified and there is no confirmed arrangement with any of those organisations. He has not identified one as a preferred future home for the firm.

Orvix has the pale pink skin and enlarged cranium characteristic of the Qiraash, with a narrow band of black hair at the nape of his neck that he wears braided. He has muted green eyes and favors carefully tailored clothes. His polished appearance reflects the importance of receptions and private meetings to his work, but he also attends them for pleasure. He enjoys conversation, flirtation and the attention that comes with being able to make a useful introduction. He remembers small details about people he meets and has been known to return a favor long after a transaction was settled. At social gatherings he continues to make contacts easily and to enjoy the company of people who have no interest in his trade. His habit of assessing what a new acquaintance knows, however, can make even a casual conversation feel like a negotiation once that habit becomes apparent.

He maintains no public affiliation to any recognized government within the galaxy, and maintains no formal citizenship. While his real estate holdings are vast, with some investment on Qiraa, he remains well travelled and explores the galaxy at his leisure. He maintains romantic relationships with all genders and lifeforms, identifying as pansexual and embracing the joy of anyone around him either as a form of pleasure, or as a potential client or target of manipulation. When traveling he is either flanked by a protocol droid or a security attache when appropriate, due his own skills with violence being his ability to move his tongue in a negotiation. While the security can rotate regularly dependent on his needs, Orvix seeks to feel independent and alone, not feeling the burdensome nature of someone constantly looking over his shoulder.

He is very analytical and seeks routines and regularity with his schedule, poorly adopting change or a lack of punctuality from others around him.
