Description
The RZ-1 A-Wing Interceptor is a piece of New Republic technology, known for having one of the fastest hyperspeeds available among unmodified starfighters. Like its Clone Wars predecessor, the ETA-2, the A-Wing requires pilots of exceptional skill to take full advantage of the vessel's speed and manoeuvrability.
The original intended function of the A-Wing was to serve as an escort for freighter convoys; however, the exceptional capabilities of its twin Event Horizon engines could not be used to their maximum potential escorting bulky, slow transports. Instead, the fighter was adapted for hit-and-run combat, sacrificing armor and shielding in favor of improving its speed and agility, which results in minor glancing blows potentially causing system malfunctions. The Event Horizon engines remain some of the most powerful sublight thrusters two decades past the A-Wing's creation and are linked to highly sensitive controls. However, this also present a number of challenges to pilots, requiring them to adjust two dorsal and two ventral stabilizer wings with great care, as even a minor turn could send the A-Wing into a massive spinout.
The combination of sensitive controls, unmatched sublight thrust, manoeuverable weapon systems, advanced sensory and stealth packages, fragility, and the prominently exposed cockpit strains even the best pilot. A-Wings earned the nickname "slims" for their small frame made of carbo-plas, but also for the "slim" chance of a pilot surviving a direct hit on the ship after the shields are down, and the cramped cockpit that altogether prevents pilots with a larger frame from flying the craft.
The A-Wing's wing-mounted laser cannons rotate up and down sixty degrees for greater fire control. Some designs even have their guns modified to swivel in a complete 360-degree arc, allowing the pilot to fire on a pursuing craft. While a tactical boon, the A-Wing lacks an astromech droid to manage its weapons systems, requiring further attention from the pilot.
