The Sandcrawler originated with mining consortium as a means of obtaining and transporting readily available ore. One of the early planets such were used on was the planet Tatooine. The desert climate coupled with kilometer after kilometer of wastelands were ideal for the Sandcrawler. Sadly the ores upon Tatooine were found to be less than desirable. Deemed to expensive to haul off the planet the near bankrupted mining consortium left them behind.

One employee remarked as they departed "Maybe the Jawas will find a use for them when we're gone. Ha! That's a laugh!"

While surely he meant it as a joke the Jawas took to the Sandcrawler like no tomorrow. With their spacious cargoholds, workshops etc they made the perfect home for an entire Jawa clan. The Jawas modified them very little choosing instead to use parts of it differently. They used the ore holds to hold salvaged goods and provide living quarters. They used the old ore suction tube to instead pick up abandoned droids and materials on the surface of Tatooine.

The Sandcrawler can even carry other vehicles though used by the mining consortium to carry prospecting vehicles that could find new veins and alert the sandcrawler, today they can be used for almost anything up to and including carrying a squadron of speeders, making it a mobile garrison.
