The Campfire Legend

The flames danced high on the rimworld night, and the stars overhead glimmered like forgotten jewels. A circle of weary spacers huddled close, passing around a battered flask of Whyren’s Reserve.

One of the old hands, a scarred Bothan with a half-blind eye, plucked a few notes on a stringed instrument and began the chant:

“I am the galloping ghost of the galaxy’s coasts, Roaming to and fro, To no one I owe…”

The younger crew leaned in, listening.

“You know who that is, don’t you?” the Bothan rasped. “That’s the one who slipped the Empire’s chains aboard Lusankya. Some say they were a pilot—fastest you ever saw. Others say a slicer, who tore open the prison systems and walked free while the guards slept.”

A Rodian snorted. “A Jedi. Has to be. Who else could vanish without a trace?”

But the Bothan only grinned, teeth flashing in the firelight. “Doesn’t matter who they were. What matters is—wherever tyranny rises, the Ghost rides again. Out by the Rim, a convoy disappears. In the Core, an admiral wakes screaming that he saw a shadow on his bridge. And always, always, someone hears the song first.”

The fire popped, the voices lifted, and the whole camp joined in:

“Look for me here, Look for me there, You won’t find me anywhere…”

And for a moment, even in that cold galaxy, they all felt the Ghost might be listening.

The Chronicler’s Record

Extract from “Songs of the Rebellion,” by Historian Meeri Talven, New Republic Archives, Hosnian Prime.

Among the many ballads born of the Galactic Civil War, few are as peculiar as The Galloping Ghost of the Galaxy’s Coasts. Its origins lie in the capture of the Super Star Destroyer Lusankya, once the Empire’s most fearsome hidden weapon.

The “Ghost” referred to in the song is believed to symbolize an unidentified individual—or perhaps several—who escaped imprisonment during the chaos of the ship’s seizure. Eyewitness accounts are contradictory: some describe a starfighter pilot vanishing into hyperspace; others claim a nameless smuggler hacked the prison systems and freed themselves.

What is undeniable is the cultural resonance of the song. Smugglers, ex-Imperials, and frontier settlers alike adopted it as a hymn of freedom from chains. By the early years of the New Republic, it was commonly sung at campfires and celebrations across the Outer Rim, often accompanied by toasts to “the one who got away.”

In time, the Galloping Ghost became less a person than a symbol. To the oppressed, they embodied hope—that no prison, not even the Empire’s greatest, could hold forever. To the freebooters and wanderers of the spacelanes, the Ghost was a patron spirit of independence, owing allegiance to no throne, banner, or government.

Thus, though no official record of the Ghost exists, the legend continues to haunt the galaxy—not as fact, but as song.

Title: The Galloping Ghost of the Galaxy’s Coasts Type: Spacer’s Folk Ballad Collected on: Ord Mantell, 12 ABY Archivist’s Notes: Commonly sung around campfires and aboard freighters, particularly among veterans and smugglers.

Background

The ballad is believed to have originated shortly after the New Republic’s capture of the Lusankya (Super Star Destroyer, formerly commanded by Ysanne Isard). Stories spread of an unknown figure—possibly a prisoner, pilot, or Jedi—who escaped during the battle. This figure was said to appear and disappear across the galaxy, harassing remnants of the Empire.

Over time, the tale shifted from history to legend. The “Galloping Ghost” became a symbol of resistance, independence, and the inability of empires to hold the free.

The song is rarely sung formally; instead, it thrives as a communal chant around fires, with spacers pounding out rhythm on crates, hulls, or tables.

Performance Notes

Tempo: Moderate, steady (like a marching song).

Rhythm: Triplet swing, to mimic galloping.

Accompaniment: Traditionally unaccompanied, but often paired with improvised percussion (canteens, boots, hand-claps). String instruments such as the nalargon lute or Corellian guitar are occasionally used.

Chorus: Always sung by all present, often louder with each repetition.

Lyrics (archival version)

Refrain (sung after each verse): I am the galloping ghost of the galaxy’s coasts, Roaming to and fro, To no one I owe, I am the galloping ghost of the galaxy’s coasts, Look for me here, Look for me there, You won’t find me anywhere…

Verse 1 They built their chains in Lusankya’s hull, Steel walls and shadows, hearts grown cold. But one slipped free through fire and smoke, A whisper, a shadow, a vow unbroke.

(Refrain)

Verse 2 The Empire searched from Core to Rim, But stars are wide and chances slim. Some say a pilot, some say a thief, Others a Jedi who brought them grief.

(Refrain)

Verse 3 In cantina corners, the stories grow— A convoy vanished, a fleet laid low. A shadow ship with no known name, Striking the tyrants and gone again.

(Refrain)

Verse 4 So light your fire and sing this song, For those who wander and can’t belong. No throne can bind, no prison hold, The ghost rides free through starlanes cold.

(Final Refrain, all voices strong)

Archival Commentary

The song persists across generations, particularly in the Outer Rim. While some historians dismiss it as simple spacer myth, others argue the Galloping Ghost may represent the psychological scars left by Imperial oppression.

important than pitch precision; singers often bend notes to mimic the sway of hyperspace travel
