Vi Kairo (Pronounced 'Vee KYE-Roh') is a Mandalorian mercenary, former Pirate, and member of Mando'ade. Though biologically Anzati, Vi is the genetically modified and cybernetically enhanced product of a failed initiative to create a force of genetically superior cloned soldiers over half a Millennium ago. He is known to be mentally and emotionally unstable as a result of excessive experimentation with his genome.
Kairo is a veteran mercenary, participating in countless conflicts over his centuries of life, including the Clone Wars and the more recent Mandalorian Civil War. He pledged his rifle to close friend Kai Oryk in Year 11 CGT, shortly before Oryk claimed the mantle of Mand'alor.
He has briefly taken command of the mercenary forces of Mando'ade, serving as Al'Ori'Ramikade in Kai's absence, and later acted as steward of sorts until the return of Anto Bajur, to whom Vi relinquished leadership with gusto. Despite his aversion to responsibility, Vi has served as second-in-command to both Oryk and Bajur at times, with far more success than his forays into leadership.
Biography
Early Years
Vi was created in the year 640 BCGT by a cabal of well-funded Khommite cloners and a Kaminoan Geneticist. His birth and formative years took place in the austere and decaying halls of a deep space installation that served as their base of operations deep in the heart of the Rishi Maze, far from the prying eyes of the Republic and scientific watchdog organizations.
Though one of several thousand prototype clones, only 5 others shared Vi's specific genetic template as the genetic alterations made it difficult for the Khommite to produce viable embryos. Dubbed "Group Esk" and numbered Esk I through Esk VI, the 6 numbered among hundreds of similar genetic failures. Nevertheless, Group Esk were educated and trained along with the other groups deemed nonviable, an attempt to identify the alterations with potential to produce superior combatants as well as create a class of officers and specialists. Among the group's many enhancements were several designed to increase strength, situational awareness, and intelligence, and resist the formation of emotional bonds between soldiers. These in particular backfired, and Group Esk was beset with numerous psychological issues. Hyper awareness and vast imagination led to severe paranoia and episodes of psychotic delusion.
Life on the station was bleak and violent, most often short with a grim conclusion. Children were raised by disinterested droids, fed the bare minimum in the form of tasteless nutrient paste, and underwent hours of intense physical training and combat instruction each day.
Failure of any sort often resulted in a clone's entire genetic template being eradicated, and any living examples "recycled." Competition between clone Groups was fierce and often violent, and encouraged by staff who felt it helped identify the most successful traits and eliminate weak links. Ambushes in hallways and classrooms were frequent, boys crept into sleeping quarters in the dead of night armed with makeshift shivs to remove their rivals, and whenever new techniques were learned during training, their field applications were often tested on other clones.
At the age of 20, not yet a quarter of the way to biological Anzati adulthood, Group Esk was selected to undergo specialized Commando training. For 10 years the 6 clones studied warfare under the tutelage of a contingent of mercenaries from all over the galaxy, learning from Echani Duelists, Ubese Mercenaries, Gand Findsmen, and Anzati Assassins.
At the culmination of this training, the clones received their first and only visit from their mysterious benefactor, Dark Jedi Riga Kasmir, the Anzati from whom their DNA originated.
Kasmir's eventual plans for the Clone Army remain unknown, but upon his visit to the station he chose to accelerate some portion of his schemes using the Special Forces trainees. Group Esk and the others that had undergone the rigorous training were too numerous despite the high casualty rate of the program. Each group was locked in a chamber with their tank-brothers and instructed to fight until only one survived. Though some groups resisted, all eventually fought and killed their brothers willingly for a chance to leave the rusting chambers that had birthed them.
These sole survivors, 240 in all, were taken from the station without ceremony and chained together in the cargo hold of a large Frigate, bound for the Galaxy proper. During the weeks of travel in the cramped conditions, the clones chose names and callsigns for themselves. Many adapted their group names or chose a handle that described a skill or physical characteristic, Besh, Hunter, Scar. Kairo and a handful of others chose to use the High Galactic Numeral from their former designations, and Esk VI became Vi.
