Description

The Galactic Sports Association (GSA) is an independent organisation whose aim is to spread sports in the galaxy.

History

Before the creation of the GSA another sport-related institution appeared in the galaxy: the Galactic Sports League (GSL). The GSL was mainly involved in promoting Shockball and organising shockball events. Due to several serious issues, shockball seasons were suspended and the GSL lost its importance. Eventually it was disbanded.

After around two years, Nat`rhon L`uukh, one of the founders of the GSL, reappeared from his isolationism and discussed with Ruben Wan the possibility to create anew an institution that could offer a wide range of sports. The Iktotchi Ruben Wan agreed and developed this idea. Today, the Galactic Sports Association is the ideal continuation of the aims and vision of the Galactic Sports League.

Charter

Essential values are thought of as universally accepted or absolute, however they may vary in importance from one sentient being to another. Given the sheer number of different races and cultures in our galaxy, they may mean different things to different people depending on the social or cultural context in which they reside. Although they can be difficult to define verbally, essential values can be easily grasped through example.

The goal of the Galactic Sports Association (GSA) is to spread the knowledge that sport is at the service of the harmonious development of any sentient being. By practicing sports, athletes improve themselves and, in turn, improve the whole society.

Sports sanctioned by the GSA follow the fundamental principles and essential values, and any organisation that seeks GSA sanctioning must comply with the fundamental principles and essential values as set in this document.

The GSA wants to contribute to building a peaceful and better galaxy by educating sentient beings through sport practised in accordance with its values.

The GSA encourages and supports the organisation, development, and coordination of sports competitions provided that such sports are at the service of sentientkind and thereby promote peace.

Participation in a GSA event

To be eligible for participation in a sporting event sanctioned by the GSA, a competitor or team must comply with the GSA principles.

Fundamental Principles and Essential Values

The fundamental principles and essential values of the GSA sporting events are seven.

1. Non-Discrimination: this applies to both sentient beings and governments. Any sentient being has the natural right to practice sports, and the GSA allows and fosters practicing sports without discrimination of any kind. Political divisions are conventional divisions for some, but when the sport is at the centre those divisions disappear. For this reason, the GSA opposes and disallows any political or commercial abuse of sports and athletes.
2. Universality: sport belongs to everyone. In all its decisions and actions, the GSA takes into account the universal impact sport can have on individuals and society.
3. Alliance between sport, education and culture: the GSA is committed to promoting the spirit of true sport, which emerges at the convergence of sport, culture and education.
4. Sustainability: The GSA organises and delivers programmes in a way that could help promoting economic, social and environmental development of the hosting location.
5. Excellence: This value stands for giving one's best, on the field of play or in the professional arena. In team sports, individuals remember to work together toward a common goal. It is not only about winning, but also about participating, making progress against personal goals, striving to be and to do our best in our daily lives and benefiting from the healthy combination of a strong body, mind and will. In pursuing - and ultimately measuring - excellence, athletes will naturally compare their efforts to others'. But the primary barometer of excellence will be reaching one's personal objectives.
6. Friendship: This value encourages us to consider sport as a tool for mutual understanding among individuals and people from all over the galaxy. The GSA sporting events inspire sentien beings to overcome political, economic, gender, racial or religious differences and forge friendships in spite of those differences. The athletes express this value by forming life-long bonds with their team mates, as well as their opponents.
7. Respect: This value incorporates respect for oneself, for one's body, for others, for the rules and regulations, for sport and the environment. Related to sport, respect stands for fair play and for the fight against doping and any other unethical behaviour.
