Katja Volkova (/ˈkɑtjə/ KAH-tyah; Born Year -2) is a Female Nautolan from the "Smugglers' Moon", Nar Shaddaa. Born to unknown parents some time in Year -2, she was left to die shortly after birth, abandoned on the lower slums levels of the Vertical City. She has no memory of her biological parents, and with no official documentation, even her exact birthdate is uncertain. On Day 73, she was discovered on the brink of death due to severe malnutrition by Tala Dystra, a local criminal and known troublemaker. Nursed back to health, the new-born infant was given the name Katja Volkova and adopted by Tala, who would raise her as her own within the harsh underworld of Nar Shaddaa. From an early age, Katja followed in the footsteps of her adoptive parent, leading to her incarceration a number of times even in her juvenile years for a smattering of pettty crimes, most commonly involving forms of larceny. Some time after reaching the age of maturity, Katja had reportedly joined up in a more official capacity with Tala Dystra's crew as their resident thief.
In Year 25, Katja left the crowded streets and neon haze of Nar Shaddaa aboard a Pelagia Duplex Command Assault Gunship named Rising Dawn. Taking on a variety of mercenary contracts across the galaxy, she gradually built a reputation and a modest fortune through persistence and skill. Her growing success eventually led to the acquisition of the Mephisto, a formidable Crusader-class Corvette. Now, Katja commands the Mephisto as its captain and leads its crew as an independent mercenary outfit.
