Red Dirt
On a sultry morning in Kiffex, the ground shook as if the planet itself was in agony. Distant screams echoed across the plain, tearing apart the silence of the peaceful life that the Karnix family knew. Ziro, stunned, wakes up on the dusty ground, his face dirty with dirt and dried blood. Next to him lies the body of a woman, the familiar shine of a bracelet on her wrist reveals who it was: Vila Nalex, his mother.
His scream rips through the landscape. “Mother! NOOOOO!” , his voice mixes with the sound of blaster shots and the smell of burning in the air. He holds her, trying in vain to bring her back.
“Ziro, run! Take your brother and run!”, it was the voice of his father, Timus Karnix, emerging between the shots. The old Kiffar fights with everything he has, blaster in hand, defending the house and his family until he is hit on the leg and falls.
Ziro tries to move, but terror paralyzes him for a second. Only when he hears his brother’s trembling voice “Ziro!”, does he force himself to act. He sees Kiro hiding behind a rock, crying, scared. “Kiro!” he shouts back, dividing his gaze between his injured father, his dead mother and the brother he could still save.
He lays his mother’s body and runs to Kiro, grabs his hand and the two of them run towards the bushes, trying to escape, but hope is short-lived. The sound of footsteps and armed voices follow them, a shot rings out, dry, precise and Kiro falls to the ground before he can scream.
Ziro reaches out to his brother but before he can reach him he gets hit on the head and falls next to him. The attack on the Karnix family and the surrounding farms as well as the close by village marked the end of innocence and the birth of something new in Ziro, a silent flame of survival and pain.
Awakening in the Domo
The darkness was thick and heavy, but not as much as the pain that throbbed in Ziro’s temples. He woke up lying on cold, damp metal, his wrists marked by handcuffs, the muffled sound of cries and moans filling the space around him. The lights in the cell flickered, revealing the faces of other humanoid figures, tired, injured and some too injured to stand. Ziro, still in shock, sat up with difficulty, the screaming on the farm, his brother’s blood, his mother’s death… everything pulsed in flashes inside his head, but there was little time for mourning here. A harsh voice broke the silence:
— “You’re young… where did they take you from?”
— “Kiffex...” Ziro replied.
— “Damn dogs, they just dont stop...”
— “Where am I?” Asked the young KIffar
— “Sadly, you are aboard the “Domo”, a pirate ship notorious for transporting prisoners and slaves to the ends of the galaxy, where beings became property.
The Rebellion in the Domo
The following days were marked by silence, exchanges of knowing glances, but after that plans started to be whispered in the shadow of the cells. The “Dome” was poorly maintained, the cell bars were old. The security system was overloaded with too many prisoners. Ziro and others, using loose pieces of metal and taking advantage of the guards distraction, managed to force a breach in the bars and with the help of an old Trandoshan and a pair of Twi’leks who knew the ship’s internal circuits, in the silence of a rotation, they made their move. When the alarms started to sound, it was already too late for the pirates, doors opened, prisoners armed with whatever they could find like cables, tubes and maintenance tools stormed the ship’s corridors. It was chaos, but it was also hope. Ziro, now driven by rage and survival, joined a small group going to the ship’s bridge. The fighting was fierce, two prisoners fell before they could make it through the last door. With the controls in hand and a last gasp of energy from the communications system, the party managed to send a distress signal.
Minutes seemed like hours, some prisoners feared reprisals, others cried silently holding each other. Ziro and a few others kept their eyes fixed on the stars through the main bridge hatch, until a light broke through the darkness. Three cruisers emerged from hyperspace, imposing with an unknown emblem glowing beneath their hulls, the answer to the distress call… The “Dome,” now without command and almost without power, was approached without resistance. Rescue troops entered and freed the prisoners one by one. Ziro came out last, with his body covered in blood and sweat, he looked up, closed his eyes and for the first time since the massacre, he breathed without fear.
The Rebirth of Ziro
The young Kiffar stayed with their rescuers and the other prisoners for a few weeks, bonds and friendships where forged, an idea was created and then it was time to leave. Having nothing to go back to, Ziro and many other once prisoners took the now renewed former pirate ship and searched for a place where he might fit in, so they traveled to the not so far Hapes planet.
Aboard the Hapan recruitment ship, Ziro felt like a stranger in a world of order, cleanliness, and discipline. The contrast with his days in the “Dome” cell, but there was something about the environment that drew him in… order, direction, purpose.
An officer in impeccable armor watched him curiously, it was rare to see someone with that look in his eyes, a mix of profound loss and a thirst for battle. When Ziro asked to be enlisted in the Hapes Marines, the officer hesitated for a moment, but the young man’s answer was simple and firm:
“They took everything from me. All I can do is fight so that no one else goes through what I went through.”
- The Making of a Soldier
The training was brutal. The Consortium did not accept weaklings. Forced marches across extreme terrain, hand-to-hand combat, survival, tactical strategies, and handling advanced weaponry.
Ziro did not stand out for his physical strength. What made him different was his resilience. While others fell, he got up. While others complained, he kept quiet and kept going.
During a training mission on a hostile planet, Ziro led a small group of cadets cornered by aggressive native creatures. With improvisation, discipline, and coolness, he led them out of the siege with zero casualties, a feat that caught the attention of the military leadership.
He was promoted to Corporal shortly after the exercise.
- Real Fire
His first real mission was aboard a frigate, responding to a pirate attack on the outskirts of Lorell. There, Ziro encountered the same kind of scum that had imprisoned him, but this time, he was armed and trained.
During the zero-gravity combat in a ruined hangar, Ziro took command when his superior was badly wounded. With quick orders and almost surgical precision, he saved the captured crew and neutralized the invaders. This operation earned him a promotion to Sergeant.
- Rise to Command
Over time, Ziro began training recruits. He was respected not only for his skills, but for his story. He was a symbol of survival, someone who had fallen through hell and come back stronger.
During campaigns in the Outer Rim, he led platoons in conflicts with separatist militias, saving civilians and securing strategic territory for the Consortium. His reports, always direct and without embellishments, stood out for their clarity and tactical intelligence.
He was promoted to Second Lieutenant after successfully commanding the evacuation of a scientific outpost under imminent threat, saving dozens of lives.
Ziro, now in ceremonial uniform, with insignia shining on his shoulder, watches the reflection in the viewfinder of a ship. Behind him, a row of recruits listens attentively.
— “Never forget what pain teaches. Discipline saves lives. And honor... is what remains when everything else is taken from us.”
Ziro Karnix was no longer just a farm boy. He was a soldier and a leader to many...
