“The protecting cloak of the Empire”

The Imperial Navy, also known as the Imperial Fleet, is the Galactic Empire's space military force and as such the largest military branch in the whole known universe. Fielding thousands of warships and fighters, ranging from the highly maneuverable TIE/in Interceptor to the massive Star Destroyers that form the bulk of their main battleline, and crewed by millions of well-trained and loyal officers and crewmen the Imperial Navy is prepared to face whatever challenges the Galaxy throws at it.

Introduction

The Imperial Navy was formed from the Republic Navy around Year -4 during the rise of the Empire. A reorganized command structure oversaw the rapid expansion of the fleet that had begun during the Clone Wars. The Navy has grown enormously since the decline of the Old Republic, but its mission has largely stayed the same:

  • Performing regular patrols of Imperial Sectors, their systems and planets;
  • Working and coordinating with the Regional Government to ensure optimal protection of Imperial Sectors;
  • Training and improving existing combat tactics as well as developing new ways to defeat the enemy;

The Imperial Navy works closely with the Imperial Army, transporting major ground force deployments and supporting them with space and aerial support.

Naval Command

Naval Command, commonly abbreviated to NCOMD and previously known as Naval High Command (NHC), is the leading body of the Imperial Navy.

The highest authority in the Imperial Navy, the Navy Commanding Officer(NCO) determines the overall strategy and plan for the Imperial Navy as well as directs the various members of the Naval Command ensuring the effective every day running of the Imperial Navy in its structure and policy. The NCO reports directly to the Imperial Throne, and is part of the Imperial High Command

Fleets & Structure

Over time, the Imperial Navy has evolved tremendously and developed several organizational structures in order to achieve the tasks and missions assigned to it. Currently the Imperial Navy fields three active fleets. Each fleet is commanded by a Fleet Commanding Officer and split into two groups, with each group being assigned to a Sector of Imperial space.

The Imperial Navy is divided into two divisions, namely:

Capital Command

Capital Command (CAPCOM) is the capital vessel warfare Division of the Imperial Navy. Using state of the art technologies, CAPCOM is characterized by the use of a range of capital ships. These ships maintain a plethora of mission roles and capabilities. From the Lancer-class Frigate in its escort role, to the massive Executor-Class Destroyers in their Fleet Flagship role, the might of CAPCOM strikes fear into the hearts of the Empire's enemies. Depending on ship type, CAPCOM may also be responsible for transporting and assisting in the deployment of both INSC and Imperial Army elements to their respective battlefields, as part of the Combined Arms doctrine of the Imperial Military.

Arranged into Fleets and then further broken down into Groups, CAPCOM form the backbone of Imperial Task Forces seen deployed throughout the galaxy. Operating with a doctrine of maneuverability, flexibility, and sheer firepower, CAPCOM vessels are designed to be employed in a variety of ways which build on the strengths of each ship class within the Group, and to take maximum advantage of an enemy’s weakness in technology, strategy, or the battlefield.

The Commanding Officer of every Group will always command the lead capital ship of the Group, and thus they will be a CAPCOM officer; although the bulk of their career may have been spent in the INSC. Highly trained in command and tactics, CAPCOM junior officers will typically serve aboard a support role capital ship such as the Carrack and Lancer Frigates, with the most capable rising to command one of the thousands of warships within the Imperial Navy. Senior CAPCOM officers will eventually be given command of the more powerful battleships such as the Victory and Imperial classes of Star Destroyers, whilst those who rise to the status of Fleet Commanding Officer will be given command of the awe-inspiring Executor-Class Destroyers.

Starfighter Corps

The Imperial Navy Starfighter Corps (INSC) is the space-based fighter warfare Division of the Imperial Navy. Maintaining an impressive battlefield record, the INSC selects only the best pilots from throughout the Empire for its mission to fly, fight, and dominate the starfighter spectrum of warfare. Advanced technology developed and used by the Empire such as the TIE/in Interceptor and TIE/sa Bomber ensures that the INSC has the power to out-maneuver hostile forces and strike quickly without warning. Maximizing the efficiency of on-board resources within the design of starfighters, most Imperial starfighters lack hyperdrives which makes the INSC fully reliant on larger vessels for transportation and deployment between systems.

Assigned to Naval Groups to support the Capital Command Division, the INSC operates with a two thrust doctrine; the first being the high quality of training and ability of its pilots, and the second a strategy of numerical superiority in starfighter combat. By operating in unison with the Capital Command Division, the INSC is able to ensure that its fighters and bombers remain at the forefront of protecting the space lanes of the galaxy.

Senior INSC officers often advise the Group Commanding Officer regarding the best application of starfighter battle doctrine in any situations where the insight of a subject matter expert is required. The junior officers of the INSC are typically employed as squadron leaders, who are responsible for 12 fighters, and lead their squadron into battle directly. The most capable and skilled pilots within the INSC will become revered for their victories, abilities, and service to the Emperor. For their achievements in both battle and service, some are granted the official status of Fighter Ace.

History

Before Year 0

Few documents or archives survived from that era but the following official document describes that before Year 0, meaning under the rules of Emperor Suntzu then Vodo Bonias, the Imperial Navy was composed of three fleets and three Reconnaissance & Strike fleets. All six fleets reported directly to the Grand Admiral of the Navy.

Four additional squadrons also existed but were not attached to any of these fleets and had specific missions like protecting the Emperor.

Year 0

The quadrants after the fleet reform of Year 1.

A change in the Imperial strategy lead by Emperor Spytek lead to a complete restructuring of the Navy. Grand Admiral Piett dissolved the Reconnaissance Strike fleets and instead created four fleets, one for each quadrant of the galaxy. Is it during that reorganization that the glorious 3rd Recon & Strike Fleet was dissolved and became the 2nd Fleet.

The four independent squadrons - Gold, Gamma, Sword, and Omega - were merged into the Imperial Command Fleet whose primary role was escorting the Emperor.

Year 1

This era is often referred to as the Golden Age of the Imperial Navy. With the unstoppable growth of the Empire's territories and sphere of influence, the need for a powerful Navy raised again. Additional fleets were created by Grand Admiral Veynom. Each controlled sector was assigned a Sector Fleet. The 3rd Recon & Strike Fleet was resurrected to patrol the uncontrolled regions. The Naval Command Fleet was created to protect Kuat, the headquarters of the Imperial Navy at that time.
