The 23rd Legion was formed as a Scout Clone Legion in the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. It has been and still is led by Senior Clone Trooper Commander ARC General Yvan Tallon (CC-8654). Continously deployed without assigned Jedi General, the 23rd operated independently, and often faced asymmetric engagements. Beyond standard flash training, many Clones of the Legion received ARC, unconventional warfare and terrain specialty training. This contributed to the Legion's relative success during its service in the Grand Army of the Republic. The Legion has seen extensive deployment, and having participated in several campaigns, has conducted operations and fought in battles primarily located in the more remote places of the southern Outer Rim.

The lack of Jedi assigned to the Legion led to a non-assignment of the behavioral overrides that other clones received. As a result, and due to the high esprit de corps of the 23rd Legion, it evaded transformation and integration into the Stormtrooper Corps during the transition to the Imperial Era and was subsequently formally decommissioned by Imperial decree while being on an assignment in Outer Rim F-4. There, the Clones of the 23rd fortified Galmud as their new home and were forgotten.

The 23rd Legion was reformed in Year 21 by General Jake Azzameen and considers itself as part of the Reformed Grand Army of the Republic. It is integrated into the Chain of Command of the Rogue Squadron under direct command of General Azzameen. Currently, the 23rd Legion is garrisoned somewhere in the Airam sector.

Service Record

To Year -22

Shortly before the Clone Wars, Tantra and Elrood systems seceded from the Galactic Republic to join the Confederacy of Independent Systems. At that time, Elrood and Tantra were on the important Rimma Trade Route in the Outer Rim. Not only a vital commerce link to the galactic core, the Route also held strategic importance due to its connection with the Hydian Way and Corellian Trade Spine. The 23rd Legion was among the units assigned to the Southern Outer Rim theatre of operations to retake both systems, Tantra and Elrood, from the Separatist Movement. Prior to their first operational deployment as part of the Tantra campaign, the Clones received flash training for operations in hot and cold environments and mountainous regions.

Tantra Campaign

In line with the strategic importance of the system on the Rimma Trade Route, the campaign plan devised by Republic Command focused on a decisive offensive to retake the system through the total annihilation of all separatist assets. The Clones of the 23rd were involved in all major phases of ground combat operations. Initially, they were employed by Republic Command as a light infantry force in skirmishes in difficult terrain and often assaulting enemy positions without additional support. Moreover, the Legion as a whole saw extensive action during the battles of Tantra III and Tantra. Following the Battle of Tantra III, the 23rd distinguished itself through a fortunate tactical mission leading to the capture of a local Separatist commander. During the Battle of Tantra, the 23rd was employed as an assault force in the combined arms attack. Ultimately the joint Republic Forces were overwhelming the Separatists, and were able to retake Tantra system for the Republic.

Elrood Campaign

Field garrisoned on Tantra III, the 23rd Legion remained forward deployed in the Southern Outer Rim theatre. Utilizing the advantage of the rather swift success at Tantra system, the Legion was assigned to liberate Elrood system. Republic Intelligence suggested only light Separatist forces, and thus the Legion was sent without additional support. Initially, the campaign proceeded smoothly. Planets Acatal, Akana, Trinka, Tufar and Thrang were recaptured with minor resistance and previously gained experiences for operations in cold environments and mountainous terrains favored the Legion. Upon landing on the planet of Elrood, however, the 23rd encountered six droid legions composed of B1 battle droids, and a complement of Armored Assault Tanks. Realizing hostile numerical superiority and tactical advantage, Legion Command deployed the 56th Heavy Weapons Company in a defensive posture, which allowed the remaining clone forces to withdraw under fire. Subsequently the Legion split up and the following weeks Legion Command utilized 12th and 15th Recon Batallions to conduct hit-and-run attacks on Separatist Forces. These tactics turned the odds into the the GAR forces favor. The Droid commanders, realizing the limited intelligence and autonomy of their own forces, withdrew to the planets capital city, sacrificing their tank complement to cover their retreat. The 23rd Legion, not intent on loosing momentum, followed suit and entered a short but fierce urban terrain battle ultimately liberating the planet, and thus system.

Various other system campaigns

After returning to their well fortified position at Tantra, the legion command elements received ARC training prior to their deployment for subsequent campaigns. The 23rd Legion was thus involved in the liberation of Coyn, Derilyn, Kidron, Kuras, Lanthrym and Meris, fighting Separatist forces on each of these worlds. Following the Legion's successful operations at Elrood, Republic Command deployed the 23rd as an independent unit, either to complement GAR forces in especially difficult theatres, or to distract adversary Separatist operations.

From Year 21

In year 23, the 105th Expeditionary Force of the Reformed Grand Army of the Republic under the banner of Ternion Corps permanently allocated a small clone element to the Rogue Squadron. While the bulk of these troopers came from the 105th, they were supplemented by troopers from the 62nd Airborne Legion, the 531st Rangers Batallion, the 185th Covert-Ops Batallion and others. Initially, these Troopers were assigned by Rogue Squadron High Command to Skor System in a prestigious honor guard billet. However, in light of their expertise in contemporary warfare and upon personal request of General Azzameen, they were tasked with providing familiarization training to the 23rd Legion at various undisclosed locations.

Operation Kuill

In year 25, the 23rd Legion deployed a forward element to Austan system, Arkanis sector. In anticipation of a full scale deployment of the Legion to reinforce Rebel ground combat operations in Arvala system, Hunnovers sector, the Clones of the 23rd were designated to support the occupation of Arvala by finding and eliminating hostile presence challenging allied control over the systems' planets. Ultimately, matters in Arvala calmed down quickly. With Rogue Squadron High Command not calling the 23rd in, the Clones left Austan soon after Arvala had been secured by allied forces.

Armor and Equipment

During its service with the Grand Army of the Republic, the 23rd was equipped with standard Phase I, later the newer Phase II armor. Standard issue weaponry included the famed DC15S blaster carbines and DC15A rifles. For operations in close quarters and urban terrain, the clones also employed V1 thermal detonators and M3 blast shields. Today, the equipment of the 23rd Legion as a light infantry brigade is reflected in the armor and weaponry used. The clones are wearing a customized version of the Heavy Battle Armor, with minor changes in appearance to accomodate to the heritage of the 23rd as a Clone Legion. The gear includes kamas and pauldrons, and while their weaponry has been classified as confidential by the Rogue Squadron's military, it is expected to be on par with common rebellion outfits.
