Captain Krab Rafdar is a veteran commander of the Clone Wars and the early years of the Second Galactic Civil War. He currently is captain of the warship The Ashuun and hires out his services and years of experience to those in need.
Early Life
Krab Rafdar was born in Year -55BGCT on the planet Nemodia. He was one of only three grubs that survived from his hive, ensuring that young Krab had an insatiable competitive drive and an appetite for power. His family, hungry for any chance of upward mobility, sent Krab to a corporate flight academy in the Duros. Remaining on the homeworld all but ensured a lower caste life. Using his inborn fortitude, he exceeded in all his studies, was set to graduate at the top of his class, and had already been offered a number of lucrative commissions in both military and merchant fleets. Just a few day before graduation, however, it was discovered that Krab had altered the grades of some of his closest competitors for valedictorian. To this day, Krab insists he would have claimed the top spot without altering the grades, but just "wanted to make it look good." He graduated the academy with high marks, but with no honors or recommendations from the faculty.
Most of his job offers were rescinded in light of the scandal over his grades, but in Year -35 Krab accepted a commission as a junior officer on a Hardcell-class Transport running a supply route between the Colonies and several Outer Rim settlements. By Year -31, Krab had been given command of his own ship running that same route. However, by that time debates in the Republic senate over galactic trade and Free Trade Zones had cast confusion over the whole industry. Greater regulation cut into his crew's profits, and Krab started looking for other opportunities for employment that would be less impacted by the Republic. He found that opportunity with the Corporate Alliance as a junior military officer. Showing his trademark tenacity, he worked his way up to serving aboard a Lucrehulk Battleship guarding the droid foundries on Geonosis.
The Clone Wars
After war broke out in Year -25, the newly formed Confederacy of Independent Systems transferred Krab to a Munificent-class frigate. His battle group was tasked with discovering the source of the Republic's surprising new clone army. The battleship he was transferred from was destroyed in the Republic's assault on Geonosis a standard month later. Late in Year -25, Krab helped temporarily shut down the Corellian Run hyperlane, and was promoted to the rank of captain. The newly-minted captain Krab Rafdar continued the hunt for the mysterious Kamino system, and was given an important role to play in the assault when the location was discovered in mid Year -24. During the assault, Krab was tasked with leading the first wave. The wave was intended to be a feint, baiting the Republic to destroy a set of dummy warships. Inside the dummy warships were specially shielded components of amphibious assault and landing craft that would fall to the oceans below s debris, where they would be reassembled and open a second front on the floating cities. Krab and his two of his three staffed frigates survived the assault, but four out of the five landing craft safely recached the oceans and began their attack. The Separatist assault on Kamino failed to destroy the cloning facilities, it still heavily damaged them and reveled the location of the planet. The Republic was forced to commit more forces to its defense and was set back by months in their reinforcements. This caused the attack to be deemed a qualified victory for the Separatists, and captain Rafdar was awarded a Dedicated Alliance Service medal for his contributions.
After Kamino, Captain Rafdar's task force was deployed to the Confederacy's strongholds in the galactic north to guard against different Republic counter-campaigns. Those campaigns quickly materialized, and Krab spent the rest of the war attempting to retake the purseworlds that were conquered or blockaded by the Republic. The Confederacy was thrown into confusion after the death of General Doom on Utapau and the execution of the senior leadership on Vinsoth. When the request came for all surviving units to make a last stand at Binquaros, it was met with suspicion. Some in Krab's task force thought it was a ruse by the newly formed Galactic Empire. Others believed it was a futile effort and refused to go, while yet others who agreed the effort was futile insisted on going and dying for the cause if necessary. The battle group decided to split up, allowing each commander to do what they believed was best for the Separatist cause. Krab and the frigate he was commanding retreated and went into hiding in the far galactic north. There, beyond the reach of Imperial patrols, they provided security to small mining colonies and assisted in regional disputes. Eventually, parts for the Separatist frigate proved rare and risky to purchase. The frigate also risked identifying them as former-Separatists as the Imperial Civil War resolved and their reach extended. Krab and crew decided to sell the warship and purchase a small number of corvettes. They operated as mercenaries and private security until Year -10.
The Rebellion
In Year -10, the war caught back up to Krab Rafdar. He was protecting ore haulers working in an asteroid field down in the Arkanis Sector when his convoy was intercepted by a pair of Imperial patrol craft. He had heard rumors of these stops being more and more frequent, but had assumed the local Imperial officials could be bribed for their discretion. This one, however, could not, and demanded to board and inspect his ships. Rather than risk his identity being discovered, Krab ordered his ships to fire upon the patrol. After the patrol was destroyed, Krab knew the Imperial presence would only increase. Using the only thing he had to bargain with, Krab commandeered the ore carriers he had been escorting and made contact with a local rebel cell, offering the ore and haulers in exchange for repair and safe harbor among the rebels.
Captain Krab spent the next sixteen years working with the rebel cell known as "Zexl's Raiders". The cell was small, but nimble and experienced. They specialized in smuggling equipment, supplies, and personnel through Imperial blockades, and Krab was able to leverage his knowledge of Separatists hyperlanes and depots or influence until he was second only to Zexl herself. While the Raiders were not present at many of the more well-known confrontations of the early rebellion, they were invaluable at securing supply lines in the southern regions and looting Imperial warehouses.
Krab was always wary of the rebels, though. He often debated his fellow commanders on the ultimate aim of the rebellion. To him, 'destroying the Empire', however attractive, was an immature goal. Some rebel leaders wanted to ensure autonomy for systems and sectors, while others had dreams of restoring some form of the Republic. A Separatists a heart, he couldn't stand the thought of rebuilding a system that had proved not only ineffectual but dangerous to all life in the galaxy. As the rebel cells began to unite under the Rebel Alliance, he grew more and more uncomfortable. The final straw came when formal discussions began to establish a New Republic. In Year 6, Krab resigned his commission, sold his ships to Zexl and disappeared into anonymous private life.
Mercenary Career
Now aged 61 standard years, Krab Rafdar was without a job or direction. But unlike his situation at the end of the Clone Wars, he was not without a significant amount of wealth in several galactic currencies. He took up residence in the Lambda Sector, and lived a comfortable life. Never one to rest on his laurels, he soon began investing in and then mentoring and training upcoming mercenary and cargo enterprises. His wealth of wartime experience as well as his collection of rebel tactics, personnel, and comm frequencies made him a popular advisor in the region. His popularity, however, also won him enemies. In Year 16, the 71-year old Nemodian relocated to the a colony in the Gaulus Sector, where he purchased and restored the Ashuun, a Clone Wars-era Separatist Dreadnaught. From his new flagship he continued to take contracts to combat pirates and defend merchant convoys.
Krab was contacted by his former rebel associate Zexl after the fall of the New Republic in Year 21, who begged for his assistance. Whatever elements of the New Republic fleet that weren't already captured or destroyed by the Imperial Navy were scattered as the remnants tried to regroup. The surviving members of Republic command were desperate for any and all sympathetic forces to assist in the defense of the former Republic sectors. Krab refused to fight under the Republic banner, but agreed to coordinate with Republic forces after he was offered a generous amount of credits. He served admirably in both the Brema and Grohl sectors, leaving with his payment once the star destroyers retreated.
