Mara Laray is a young female Chiss who has left her home planet of Csilla to explore the galaxy.
History
Early Life
Mara Laray was born a month prematurely during Year 6 BCGT on the Chiss homeplanet of Csilla. Because the birth was unexpected her mother, Naq'eheti, was not able to receive proper medical treatment for complications during the labor and as a result died two hours after Mara was born. Mara’s father, Sirn'uortoi, always held her partially responsible for his wife’s death.
Sirn'uortoi often left Mara at the estate when he left on his many business trips as an adviser to one of the members of the Chiss Parliament. In such cases, he left her under the supervision of his head cook Chalap'irao who took quite a liking the the bright little girl and spent much of his free time with her. Soon, the cook looked after Mara even when her father was home.
Mara had one older brother, Tlarik, who started training to be an officer in the Chiss Expansionary Defense Force at a young age and therefore rarely saw his younger sister. Mara's father was very proud of his son and often praised his varied accomplishments and the honor he brought to his family, paying little or no attention to his younger daughter and often, in fact, actively avoiding her.
From a young age Mara had to learn how to fend for herself throughout most of the day in the absence of any friends to play with. She was an imaginative girl but often still lonely at times. When Mara did go on small trips with her father she was quiet and shy though instinctively curious about people she didn't know.
At the age of twelve Mara was sent off to a nearby boarding school where she received an excellent education and was especially proficient in learning Basic and the languages of other races which continually fascinated her. Mara did not make many friends, but instead spent much of her time in the library, most often researching piloting and ships, hoping to one day explore the galaxy.
Mara graduated school a year early during Year 10 and went on to work in the Chiss Expeditionary Library for several years, helping to decrypt and enter the files into the new electronic datacore that was being formed to serve in place of the original physical library.
Leaving Csilla
In Year 16 Mara met a member of the group The Black Hand. Always curious about outsiders, she questioned him about where he was from and he explained to her his work in The Black Hand, eventually offering her a job. Around the same time, Mara was promoted to work as the Chief Archivist of the CEL and, as the datacore had finally been completed, she decided that she could perform her duties in this position remotely. Because of this, she accepted the job offer and began her work with The Black Hand at the same time achieving her lifelong dream of leaving Csilla for destinations unknown.
