Lief Ragnos, born Khamengi of clan Khanu'bar, is a Noghri politician and retired military officer who currently serves as Director of the Khanu'bar Institute. He is most notable for his service in the armed forces of the Tresario Star Kingdom and its predecessors.

Biography

Early life and Clone Wars

Khamengi was born on Honoghr to a Noghri family of clan Khanu'bar in the final years of the Galactic Republic. Raised in the rural traditions of the Noghri and his clan, he learned to farm dekh grain, herd the flocks of khengr birds, and train for war through the sport of turkha. He took part in his first raid at the age of 14, against the rival clan Virkh'ush, and became renowned for his leadership skills as much as his talent with the fighting sickle. These drew the attention of the Stava Regiment, a Noghri-led mercenary unit working for off-world clients during the Clone Wars. Recruited by Stava, Khamengi was assigned to Ragnos Squad, from which he adopted the nom-de-guerre Lief Ragnos. It was during covert operations in the Farrfin sector that news of the fate of Honoghr reached the unit. Those wishing to return to their homeworld, Ragnos Squad among them, clashed with Regiment leadership, who insisted on completion of the mission. Disagreement turned to mutiny on the surface of Charmath. Lief, the only survivor from his squad, stowed away on a freighter and made his way back to Honoghr. There he found the planet ruined and his clan wiped out by the Trihexalophine1138 toxin; with nothing to return to, Ragnos set off once again. During the next three decades, Ragnos claims to have worked in a variety of jobs across the galaxy, including as a freelance mercenary, a freight pilot, a bodyguard, a shipbreaker, a bounty hunter, a chef, and a speeder mechanic.

New Anzat Order

In Year 7 (CGT), having grown tired of a nomadic life, Ragnos applied to join the Anzatan People's Guard as an officer candidate. The New Anzat Order, which had come to govern Honoghr, appointed him a Warrant Officer and, shortly after, commissioned him a Second Lieutenant of the Guard, the NAO's land forces. Rapid promotions led him to assume command of First Battalion, later reorganised as Loyalist Battalion, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Near the beginning of Year 8 (CGT), Ragnos requested and received an honourable discharge from the Anzatan People's Guard in order to pursue a career with the Trade Federation.

Trade Federation

Lief Ragnos joined the Trade Federation's Department of the Navy in Year 8 (CGT). There he was assigned to Battlegroup Oseon and took part in maneuvers around what would later be recognised as the Hevvrol sector. Six months into his service, Ragnos received a personal appeal from Regent Wilhelm von Ismay of the New Anzat Order, requesting his return to the Guard. Ragnos was honourably discharged from service with the Trade Federation.

Anzatan Commonwealth

Back in NAO, Ragnos attempted to reinforce a Guard that was suffering defeats across all of Anzatan space. He raised the alarm regarding Mandalorian forces working to take over his homeworld of Honoghr, but it was too late for an Anzatan military spread thin. The planet soon fell to the government of Mandalore, with whom Ragnos developed a personal vendetta. Later in Year 8 (CGT), he took part in NAO operations to recover the Honoghr system, which nevertheless failed to retake it. Over the course of this conflict, Ragnos was promoted to High Colonel and Executive Officer of the Guard.

In Year 9 (CGT), the New Anzat Order was reorganised into the Anzatan Commonwealth, and the Anzatan People's Guard into the Royal Anzatan Marines. Under the new rank structure, Ragnos was commissioned a Staff Commander and assigned as XO of the Kesselian Dragoons Squadron, based out of the Kessa system. Ragnos soon served as acting CO of the unit, an appointment that became permanent following the Squadron's reorganisation as Alpha Company due to another set of reforms. Ragnos received the rank of Brigadier General and was, during this time, elected to the short-lived Parliament of the Anzatan Commonwealth, representing the Kessel Sector as a member of the Liberal Democratic Party.

Shortly before the coup against Anzatan leader Wilhelm von Ismay, which ended in his assassination by Keishi Miahr and Soki Ionian, Ragnos was honourably discharged from the Royal Anzatan Marines in order to pursue civilian business on Honoghr. Fearing he might be targetted by the new regime due to his affiliation with the von Ismays, Ragnos went into hiding the following years.

Khanu'bar Institute

In Year 10 (CGT), Lief Ragnos founded the Khanu'bar Institute as a non-profit, neutral organisation dedicated to the social and environmental improvement of Honoghr. As director of the Institute, he oversaw its mission from self-imposed exile, being opposed to Mandalore's control of the planet. In Year 13 (CGT), there was a rapprochement between Ragnos and the new Anzatan regime, leading the Khanu'bar Institute to establish its headquarters-in-exile on Anzat, though Ragnos declined a return to the Anzatan military. The organisation's most famous branch is its Astrographic Department, which since Year 23 (CGT) has raised funds by offering commercial astrography services to clients across the galaxy.

Tresario Star Kingdom

In Year 23 (CGT), Ragnos received a commission in the Tresario Star Kingdom Army, the successor institution to the Royal Anzatan Marines following the merger of the Anzatan Commonwealth into the Tresario Star Kingdom. He held the rank of Colonel until Year 24, when he retired from service with the Tresarian military shortly before his 65th birthday.
